The workshop on Gender Sensitization was organized by the Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti College on 11th April 2016 to 13th April 2016. The resource persons for the workshop was a team from Visthar, an organization that works for social justice and peace. The Main resource person was Ms. Unopa Makanayaka, followed by Mrs. Asha V and Mrs. Shanti S. The workshop was inaugurated in the second MSW Classroom, Room 511, UG Block, Kristu Jayanti College.
On Day One, the session was started at 11am in the second MSW Classroom, Room 511, UG Block, Kristu Jayanti College. The resource persons were mainly Ms. Unopa and Mrs. Asha. The session gave valuable insights on the existing stereotypes of gender, difference between gender and sex and the entire objective was to make the students challenge their thought processes and deconstruct their current understanding of gender. The sessions had various activites such as drawing, role plays, debates etc. Ms. Unopa also made the students fill a questionnaire and later discussed each statement in detail and encouraged the students to think outside the box and participate in debates. The session was concluded at 4:30 pm.
On Day Two, the session was started at 9am in the Second MSW Classroom, Room 511, UG Block, Kristu Jayanti College. The resource persons showed a documentary called the Killling Us Softly 4, it gave students an understanding on how media affects gender. The morning session mainly discussed on the objectification of women in all spheres of life. Various role plays were performed, where in the students corrected the existing advertisements in a gender neutral way. The afternoon session began with a case study of a woman in Rajasthan who was physically, psychologically and sexually abused, gave up on her marriage and helped various women in her community who were experiencing worst form of abuse and violence. The session was concluded with a debate on Women not being allowed in temples during menstruation.
On Day Three, the session was started at 9am in the Second MSW Classroom, Room 511, UG Block, Kristu Jayanti College. The resource persons discussed the concept of power and how patriarchy give power solemnly to men and how this power is used as a tool to subjugate women in all spheres and at levels of life, such as home, community etc. The resource person Mrs. Shanti also explained the sexual harassment act and anti-dowry act. Ms, Unopa used theatre of the oppressed to make the students analyse various forms of violence done on women. In the afternoon session the students were given insights on feminism and maleism followed by which a debate was conducted to challenge the patriarchal ideologies. The session was concluded by discussing various strategies to promote positive social change in the society.
The three-day workshop was concluded with the valedictory ceremony held in Room 510, UG Block, Kristu Jayanti College. The dignitaries on the stage were Ms. Unopa Makanayaka, resource person for the workshop, Dr Jonas Richard, Head of Department of Social Work, Assistant Professor Mrs Shymol Mather, Coordinator of the workshop and Mrs Shanti S, Resource Person for the workshop. The ceremony included the talks by Ms. Unopa and Dr. Jonas Richard. Two of the students, namely Ms. Smitha and Mr. Melvin Mathew gave their valuable feedbacks and ceremony was concluded by the vote of thanks by Mr. Dony Babu.
