The PG Department of Social Work organized a special lecture on "Human Rights Issues in International Migration: A South-Asian Perspective" on 6th February 2016. The speaker was Fr. Dolphie Sequira, SDB, The Director, Don Bosco South Asian Youth Services (Don Bosco-SAYS), Hong Kong. As a Professional Social Worker working in the area of international migration, he explained the concept of migration and its effects on migrants. According to him, migrants contribute to economic growth and human development in both home and host countries and enhance societies through cultural diversity, fostering understanding and respect among peoples, cultures and societies. He was also highlighting some of the human rights violations associated with migration like denial of access to fundamental rights, economic rights and social rights comprising right to education, the right to health etc. The role of Social Workers in dealing with the plights of migrants and their professional intervention were discussed in detail by the speaker.
