Biofertilizers are known to play a number of vital roles in soil fertility, crop productivity and production in agriculture as they are ecofriendly that are indispensable for getting maximum crop yields. They supplement chemical fertilizers for meeting the integrated nutrient demand of the crops. Under optimum soil conditions and thereby increases total crop yield. Lab to Field is an innovative programme based on the outcome of practical experiments conducted in the laboratory sessions of the Classes of the Department of Life Sciences. A Consortium of organisms was developed in the laboratory which can enhance the fertility of the cultivating lands. Based on the pilot studies carried out in the laboratories as well as the premises of the college, it has been proved that the consortium of organisms can be used as a fertilizer as well as a soil ameliorating agent. The consortium was further developed as a biofertilizer product using inert support materials. The product was then taken to field trials in the near villages and proved as an effective biofertilizer. In order educate the Farmers about the harm full effect of continuous use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, they were given classes on organic farming methods and encouraged them by providing the biofertilizer product developed in the laboratory for field application free of cost. This is initiative started in 2012 and it continues by the students and faculty members.
Students of Life Sciences department under the guidance of Dr.M.A.Deepa formulated biofertilizers in the laboratory with Rhizobium, Aspergillus etc., and went for a field demonstrations to Aashalaya, Geddalahalli, Bangalore and insisting the importance of biofertilizers and their use in agriculture.
