The Department of Life Sciences of Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore, has always played a pivotal role in inculcating and boosting scientific temper among the students through various activities. Driven by same vision, the department had organized a guest lecture on the 10th of August 2016. The resource person for the guest lecture was Dr.Robin Sebastian, an alumnus of Kristu Jayanti College. The event was conducted in the mini auditorium II at 2.30 p.m. Dr.Calistus Jude, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Dr.Elcey C.D., Head, Department of Life Sciences and all other Faculty members from the Department graced the occasion with their presence. The talk was arranged for both UG and PG students of the department.
During the talk, Dr. Robin gave an insight into his research work which was based on DNA repair leading to genomic instability due to exposure of endosulfan. His findings have revealed that exposure to endosulfan affects fertility in animals. He also did a molecular level study on DNA, to find out whether endosulfan modifies its structure. In the second part of the lecture, Dr. Robin discussed about the opportunities for research in India and gave valuable inputs for the students regarding funding agencies.
Dr. Robin, an Ex-Jayantian and has done the institution proud through his various academic achievements. He completed his graduation in the year 2008, then pursued Integrated Ph.D. programme at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a reputed institution which is internationally renowned. He has been awarded several fellowships and has also been awarded with international travel grant award. He has also delivered several talks on his Ph.D. work at several reputed institutions abroad.
He has been offered a Post Doctoral Research Fellowship by the National Cancer Institute at Washington DC where he plans on pursuing his post doctoral research.
Many students interacted with Dr. Robin enquiring about details of his research findings. Students also enquired about the avenues for research for students of Life Sciences. The talk in a nutshell, was a truly enriching and motivating experience for the audience and was a real source of inspiration.
