An industrial visit was arranged for the final year B. Sc. and M. Sc. Students. We visited places in Ooty and Coonoor from 13.03.2016 to 16.03.2016. We firstly visited the Benchmark Tea Factory at Doddabetta on 14th of March at 9:30am where Mr. Nanjundaiah explained about the history of tea, types of specific tea, tea processing- CTC tea processing and brewing of tea. During the course of explanation, people got the chance to taste the tea which was specialty of that factory. The aroma and the taste were totally different from any common tea. At the end of the visit we were awarded with certificate that certified us for learning about tea processing and tasting.
The Pasteur Institute of India located in Coonoor, Nilgiris was visited on 15th March 2016 at 10:30am. The students were led to the classroom where the lecture was conducted on history of immunology and vaccination. This was then followed by the brief explanation on the production of Rabies, BCG and DPT, vaccines. The talk was mostly emphasized on the Rabies vaccine and the processes involved in the production and its down streaming. After the lecture session, the students were allowed to visit the museum within the institute where some ancient day’s instruments like fermenters, fluorescent microscope, centrifuges, microtome and swan neck flask were exhibited. The flow charts for the production of Tetanus, Diptheria toxoid, Pertusis component, Tissue Culture Antirabies vaccine etc., were displayed. There were also the handwritten paper of Louis Pasteur and pictures of several dignitaries who visited the institute.
The second lecture was handled by Mr. Ramakrishnan, who explained about animal models and the CPCSEA (Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision on Experiments on Animals) norms and guidelines. He also demonstrated the route of immunization and blood withdrawal from animals such as guinea pigs, rats and mice. On the whole this industrial visit was of great use as we got to visit two important industries that made us aware of the processes and methodologies followed in those institutions.
