The Department of Social Work organized an expert lecture on the “Role on Medical Social Worker in Oncology Department” on 16th July 2016. The expert lecture session was handled by Dr. Janet Parameshwar (Head, Department of Social Welfare, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology). The session began with the expert speaker shedding light on the functioning of Kidwai and specifically the Social Welfare Department among cancer patients. Dr. Janet enlightened the Social Work students on the basic knowledge relating to the causes, symptoms and types of treatment for cancer.
The speaker encouraged the students to pursue additional courses like nutrition, health and hospital administration to strengthen their career. Dr. Janet emphasized on the significance of updating one’s knowledge base to provide effective services to the patients which will eventually distinguish social workers from other professionals. The session involved experiences and challenges being shared by the speaker which gave the students a glance at the reality of Oncology Social Work.
The expert lecture concluded with an interactive session which reflected the interest of the students from all the specialisations.
