The Department of Social Work organized an observation visit for the 2nd year MSW students on 11th July 2016 to St. John’s Medical College Hospital, Bangalore. The objective was to provide an avenue for student trainees to gain insights on the role of a social worker in a medical setting.
Mrs. Eliza, Head of the Social work Department at St. John’s Hospital gave an overview of the history and the structure of the Department of Medical Psychiatry. Through her vast experience in the field of medical psychiatry she could enlighten the trainees on the Counselling and on how to maintain the professional relationship with the clients. Later Mr. Biju and Mr. Sachin briefed on the Renal Social Work (Pediatric Nephrology) and the Emergency Social Work respectively.
The key element that the trainees learnt was the vital role played by the medical social workers in linking the medical staff and the patients/clients.
