The speaker introduced the concept of Relational Approach in Social Work. The approach aims at engaging existing networks of individuals with problems to enhance their resilience and capacity to resolve difficulties. The highlighted feature of the approach is that it engages, mobilises and develops both supportive and problem- solving networks as mentioned by the speaker. Dr. Calcaterra stated that the term network refers to family members, friends, teachers and any other significant factors that have a contribution to make in problem- solving.
The speaker said that every child has the right to express their opinions according to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Children. Unfortunately this right is violated, hence the need for Advocacy for the rights of children. Advocacy as stated by Dr. Calcaterra is when Social Workers voice human concerns and engage in intimate problem- solving for individuals. Dr. Calcaterra stated that technical knowledge and dedication are qualities required in a Social Worker to help individuals. The speaker elaborated the process of placing children under foster care through family group conference and assessments done by the Social Worker.
The queries session aided in the participants gaining a broader understanding of Social Work Practice in Italy, Child Protection and Advocacy. The various questions discussed were difference between Social Work practice in Italy and India, family group conference, problems faced by youth in Italy, measures to prevent sexual abuse among children, challenges faced by Social Workers in Italy and on the National Social Work Council of Italy.
