The program began with a session on "Safe and Efficient Laboratory Practices" by Dr. Priya Josson, who emphasized the importance of personal safety, cleanliness, and general laboratory protocols. This was followed by a session on "Good Microbiology Lab Practices" by Dr. Reena Josephine, which focused on sterile techniques, contamination control, and safe handling of microbial cultures.
Dr. Sonia Angeline addressed the students on "Laboratory Etiquettes and Discipline in Biotechnology," highlighting the need for systematic record-keeping, responsible equipment handling, and lab ethics. Dr. Arun then presented on "Good Genetics Lab Practices," focusing on specimen preparation, observation protocols, and accuracy in genetic experiments.
Dr. Vijayanand S delivered an insightful talk on "Laboratory Etiquettes and Discipline in Biochemistry," emphasizing chemical safety, glassware handling, and procedural consistency. The day concluded with Dr. Sivagamasundari U’s session on "Good Botany Lab Practices," where she discussed the importance of plant sample preparation, proper storage, and the use of microscopes in botany labs.
The session provided an interactive and multidisciplinary exposure to foundational lab practices. Through this initiative, the department aimed to promote a culture of safety, discipline, and scientific integrity among first-year students, preparing them for upcoming practical sessions in their respective specializations.
Good Laboratory Practices – III Year BSc BOBT, BTBC, BTGE, MBGE
Date: 25 to 31 July 2025
The Department of Life Sciences conducted a series of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) sessions for III Year B.Sc. students from the BOBT, BTBC, BTGE, and MBGE streams between 25th and 31st July 2025. The programme aimed to reinforce laboratory safety, discipline, and subject-specific technical skills, preparing students for higher-level academic and research work.
The sessions commenced on 25th July, with Dr. Sangeetha Menon and Dr. Mamatha N Murthy leading sessions for MBGE students on microbiology and genetics lab practices. Dr. Anoja Kurian, Dr. Mamatha N Murthy, and Dr. Saraswathi conducted training for BTGE students on 28th July, covering biotechnology and genetics practices. On 30th July, BTGE students received further guidance from Dr. Aruna and Dr. Saraswathi in genetics and biotechnology labs, followed by Dr. Mamatha N Murthy's session on 31st July.
Simultaneously, BOBT and BTBC students attended their respective sessions: Dr. Anoja Kurian led biotechnology training for BOBT on 25th July, and Dr. Sivagamasundari U conducted botany lab training on 28th July. Dr. Kushi Anand and Dr. S. Vijayanand trained BTBC students on biotechnology and biochemistry practices respectively.
Each session provided hands-on experience in lab safety protocols, sterile techniques, proper documentation, sample handling, and waste disposal. The interactive format and individual batch-wise focus ensured every student received direct guidance in applying GLP principles relevant to their specialization. These sessions significantly contributed to instilling lab discipline, ethical practices, and technical competency among the students.
Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) Programme - 2025-26
Date: 15 to 17 July 2025
The Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) Programme for II Year M.Sc. students of Biochemistry (BC), Microbiology (MB), and Biotechnology (BT) was conducted from 15th to 17th July 2025 by the Department of Life Sciences. The sessions aimed to reinforce lab safety, accuracy, and ethical responsibility through hands-on training in discipline-specific laboratories.
On 15th July, M.Sc. Biochemistry students attended sessions in the BC and PG BC Labs under Dr. Malathi R and Dr. Jerrina Pinto, covering Biochemistry and Microbiology lab practices respectively. Simultaneously, M.Sc. Microbiology students were trained by Dr. Elcey C D, Dr. C M Reena Josephine, and Dr. Amritha across MB, PG MB, and Genetics Labs on Microbiology lab practices. M.Sc.
