VAC on Traditional Knowledge System – Change and Continuity
Date:08 to 12 July 2025
The Department of Social sciences and Languages offered an intensive short-term course titled "Traditional Knowledge System – Change and Continuity" from 8th to 12th July 2025. The course was designed to help students analyze how traditional knowledge systems have evolved, persisted, and adapted, drawing on sociological perspectives to explore both change and continuity.

A significant focus was placed on the shifting role of youth, media, and marketing in revitalizing or reshaping traditional practices, illustrated by case studies such as the revival of millets and indigenous art forms like the Cheraw Dance. Contemporary challenges, including the commercialization of handloom and conflicts with Western science, were also discussed in depth. The practical component of the course was especially impactful, featuring hands-on sessions where students prepared dyes from natural sources—like turmeric, beetroot, leaves, and coffee—and used them to create expressive works of art. This activity not only fostered creativity but also deepened students' understanding of the science and cultural significance underlying traditional dyeing methods. The program proved successful in equipping students with the skills and knowledge to recognize, preserve, and creatively adapt traditional knowledge systems for contemporary applications.
