On Rec 2024: An Intracollegiate Media Fest

The Department of Media Studies organized ‘On Rec 2024’ with the theme ‘Creative Transitions on Record’ on 26 March 2024 at P1 Auditorium from 9:30 am. The fest was hosted by students of IV semester MA Journalism and Mass Communication programme who meticulously planned various on-stage and off-stage events. The events included various media-related competitions such as Quiz, Debate, RJ hunt, Photography, Poster making etc. Students of II semester MA JMC actively participated in all the events conducted as part of the fest. The fest was officially inaugurated by Dr. Gopakumar A V, Dean, Faculty of Humanities. The events concluded with a valedictory ceremony, which was graced by the presence of Rev. Fr. Deepu Joy, Director of the Student Welfare Office, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous. Certificates were distributed to all the winners of the various competitions by Rev. Fr. Deepu Joy and Dr. Gopakuamr A V.

Hitchcock Film Festival

The Department of Media Studies organized the "Hitchcock Film Festival" on March 13, 2024, in the A2 Auditorium. This film festival honors Alfred Hitchcock, one of the most influential directors in world cinema history. After screening three of Hitchcock's best films, an intra-college short film competition was organized. The awards were given for best short film, best director, best cinematographer, and most popular short film.

Lumos 2024: Annual Photography Exhibition Celebrates the Photography Skills of Jayantians

Department of Media Studies, Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous conducted Lumos 2024, the annual photography exhibition on 22 February 2024. The exhibition was inaugurated by Fr. Jais V Thomas, Financial Administrator and Director, Jayantian Extension Services and also graced by the presence of Fr. Joshy Mathew, Director, Department of Media Studies; Director, Library and Information Centre; Director, HR Department and Head, Department of English. The Lumos 2024 with the tagline ‘adding light to life’ showcased more than 250 photographs of aspiring photographers of Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous on the theme Chiaroscuro and open entries on various other significant themes. The photographs were exhibited in M1 Auditorium from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM along with creative installations and photobooth to invoke interest towards photography among the visitors.

Art Exhibition: Unveiling the Canvas of Creativity

An art exhibition titled ‘Art Beat’ was organised by the Department of Media Studies on 31 January 2024 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at M2 Auditorium, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous, Bangalore. The exhibition was organised to celebrate the rich tapestry of artistic expression, which is capable of transforming canvases and transcending boundaries. The students of II semester BA Visual Communication exhibited the collages from the Kala-Prathibha, collage making competition held on 24 January 2024 along with paintings and handmade brochures and product packaging designs they have created. A valedictory ceremony was conducted at 4:00 pm to acknowledge the students for their artworks. Dr. Gopakumar A V, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, addressed the gathering and stressed on the importance of artistic expression. He congratulated the teachers and students for conducting the art exhibition. Best collages, paintings, brochures and product packaging designs were selected and the respective students were awarded with certificates.

Kala Prathiba (Collage Competition)
The Department of Media Studies hosted Kala Prathiba (where ideas collide), on January 24, 2024, at around 12 p.m., in the Amphitheatre, a creative collage-making competition for Ⅱ semester BA Visual Communication students. There were 14 groups altogether, with four people on each team. Students entered the competition with great enthusiasm and added more creativity and originality to their collages. The final results of the competition will be disclosed once the exhibition of the collage is completed.

World Photography Day
In celebration of World Photography Day, Kristu Jayanti College's Department of Media Studies unveiled "Focus," an exhibition showcasing the artistic talents of 47 student photographers through over 200 images. Centered around the themes of Art of Mundane, Power of Colours, and Local Artisans, the exhibition captivated more than 500 visitors with its transformation of everyday scenes into extraordinary visual narratives. The event was inaugurated by Fr Dr Augustine George, Principal of Kristu Jayanti College, with the launch of the exhibition video. Dr Gopakumar AV, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Head in-charge, Department of Media Studies, Mr Aby Augustine, Ms Sreedevi VK, Faculty coordinators, Focus 2023, Ms Tanisha K and Mr Jason Mathew George, Student coordinators, Focus 2023, were also present during the inauguration.

Focus- Photography Exhibition to Commemorate World Photography Day
Department of Media Studies (UG) organized Focus- Photo Exhibition to commemorate World Photography Day on August 19, 2022. Fr. Dr. Augustine George, Principal, Kristu Jayanti College inaugurated the exhibition by switching on the exhibition video prepared by the V semester BA Visual Communication students. During his inaugural address Fr. Dr. Augustine George highlighted the significance of photographs in our lives. He said, “photographers generate meanings to photographs by carefully arranging various elements and applying them thoughtfully in the composition. Therefore, every photographer creates his artistic expressions through the moments he captures with his camera”.

Fr. Dr. Augustine George released the photography magazine ‘The Hues’ produced by BA Visual Communication by handing it to Dr. Gopakumar AV, Dean, Faculty of Humanities. Prof. Abraham, Programme Coordinator, Media Studies (UG), and Mr. Emmanuel Edwin, Student Coordinator were also present.

Prizes for various photography competitions held as part of World Photography day were given to the winners. Mr. Joshua Singh, V Sem BA Visual Communication bagged First Place in Discourse- Photo Essay competition, and the team comprising Mr. Alwin Johnson, Ms. M P Shivapriya, and Ms. Lakshmi S Thottupurathu won First Place in Photo Recreation.

More than 200 photographs showcasing the essence of Bengaluru streets captured by BA Visual Communication students were exhibited during the exhibition.

Mediarchy 2022- Annual Intra- collegiate Media Fest
The second annual intra- collegiate Media Fest- Mediarchy 2022 was organised by the Department of Media Studies (UG) in association with the Journalism Club. Held on 9th April 2022, the event was inaugurated by Ms Deepika KC, Deputy City Editor and Special Correspondent, The Hindu and Fr. Lijo P Thomas, Financial Administrator, Kristu Jayanti College. During the inaugural, Ms Deepika KC shared her experiences as a journalist and encouraged that journalism is an excellent field with much potential, as long as one doesn't lose sight of why they chose this field or compromise on their values or objectivity the way.

Fr. Lijo P Thomas, Financial Administrator, Prof. Abraham, Program Coordinator, Department of Media Studies (UG), Ms Parvathy R Menon and Mr Abhishek P, Student Coordinators of the Journalism Club, faculty members and students were present during the inaugural session.

The fest comprised nine events that tested the students’ poster making, reporting, photography, video making, storyboarding, ad critiquing, podcasting, crisis communication, and other quick-thinking skills.

Mediarchy - Intracollegiate Media Fest
The Department of Media Studies organised the first edition of the intracollegiate media fest ‘Mediarchy – The Power of Media’ on 08 December 2020. The inauguration of the event was conducted by Shri Jitender Bhargava, Director PRCI, author and former Executive Director of Air India.

The inauguration of the event was conducted by Shri Jitender Bhargava, Director PRCI, author and former Executive Director of Air India. Shri Bhargava spoke about the power of media in a democracy. He urged the aspiring journalist to look at the course as a crusader.

“As a journalist, you can make a difference in the minds of people. Media should reflect public opinion. Media in our country fails to reflect the sentiments at the grass-root level. As media students, you must try and stay rooted, keep your ears to the ground and listen to the public. There is no shortcut to glory in journalism. Keep researching, “he said.

Dr Augustine George, Principal Kristu Jayanti College, appreciated the initiative of the department. He asked the students to go beyond the syllabus and apply their skills to become a responsible journalist in future. He motivated the students to participate in the events to hone their skills.

The first edition of the media fest comprised six events that tested the reporting, photography, videography, designing, marketing and quick thinking skills of the students. Fr Lijo Thomas congratulated the winners of the Mediarchy. Media plays a crucial role in shaping the reality of the world. The fest Mediarchy provided a platform for students to engage and sharpen their media skills with exciting events.

Fade In: Documentary Festival
Kristu Jayanti College Film Club in association with Department of Media Studies organised its first-ever ‘virtual’ Fade In: Documentary Festival on 24th October 2020. The chief guest of the event was Dr. C.S. Venkiteswaran, a well-known documentary filmmaker and film critic. The presidential address was given by Rev. Dr. Augustine George, Principal, Kristu Jayanti College.

Dr. Venkiteswaran appreciated the efforts of the college and its management for organising the virtual fest. While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused loss of life and uncertainty, Dr. Venkiteswaran sees these testing times as an opportunity to reflect and introspect on our lives. He says, “Getting back to the old normal is not a solution to the pandemic, rediscovering a new normal is.” According to him, the time we spend moulds us- morally, spiritually, and in terms of creative imagination. Dr. Venkiteswaran added that, a documentary unlike other filming genres is a reflection of the real world. It allows a person to critically understand and explore the world around him. The process of documentary making is a journey of discoveries, full of learning and surprises.”

Around 150 students were part of the event. During the interactive session, participants raised the questions on OTT platforms, historical perspective of documentary etc.

The interactive session was then followed by Documentary Screening. Student Directors shared their experiences and views on the process of the documentary making, and gave a few words of advice to their juniors. Altogether the virtual fest was both insightful and entertaining, making it a successful event.

The Pixel Moment!!- Lumos-the annual photography exhibition
“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” Lumos, the photography exhibition has been organized since the year 2012 by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication along with Photography Club. The preparations for the Pixel Story were in full swing this year, where faculties and students were equally excited and showed their interests by participating in various online photography and photo battle competitions as well.

Rev. Fr.Dr. Augustine George, Vice Principle, Kristu Jayanti College, began the Pixel Story with the ribbon cutting ceremony. Father inaugurated the event with a sweet little Polaroid camera by clicking on a snapshot of the organizing team, thus demonstrating his passion and skill in photography.

Through his powerful words, he encouraged the students and made us look at the images in a different perspective. He said a photographer's talent lies in how well the people understand what he is trying to portray through his image. He also said that pictures are all about moments and every picture has memories related to them. . Kristu Jayanti College's Department of Mass Communication and Journalism offered students ample opportunities to bring out their talents and to explore new and existing things in the outside world. Lumos is one such opportunity provided by the department where students in college could explore their photographer self and display some of their best clicks.

Fade In 2019: Intra Collegiate film festival
15 years ago, Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore constituted a film club for the film lovers within the campus. FADE-IN, the flagship program of film club was started in Kristu Jayanti College which is a humongous interest for film lovers. FADE-IN 2019 a two intra-collegiate film fest was inaugurated on 23 August 2019 at 9.30 AM. Shri. TR Gopalakrishnan, Former Editor, The Week was the Chief Guest. He addressed the students on the career scope as film Journalists and the new style that can be adopted from the film technique for breaking news. “The trend of our generation was going to a movie together and now it is fading away due to the unlimited availability of visual entertainment through various gadgets”, he opined.”

Imagine producing news as a cinema on a show time basis, people will get special interest to watch the news if that’s the case” he added. Also shared so many innovative views on emerging techniques from film and journalism to tell a real-life story and enlightened the Jayantians in an extraordinary manner. “The two-day fest enabled us to appreciate the different genres of films prepared at the different era with different techniques”, said Sachin Nair, III semester JPCS Student.

The number of efforts put by the management and coordinators to make the fest successful was admirable. Fade In 2019 began by paying homage to Shri. Girish Karnad, the popular playwright, actor, administrator, and public intellectual. One of the famous scripts “the blaze presentation” was played and students were enlightened by the screenplay in it. The two-day fest screened 06 films from Indian and International panorama.

Book exhibition in order to educate Students and Faculties towards Library Collections and the New Arrivals was organized by the Department of Library & Information Centre and Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Kristu Jayanti College was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Smt. Santwana Bhattacharya, Resident Editor, The New Indian Express, Bangalore emphasized on how reading helps us to learn and know what is peddled to us on July 18, 2019.

Session:
The welcome address was given by Mr Harish D N Chief Librarian expressed his gratitude on the successful of course of the event. The presidential Address was delivered by Rev Fr Emmanuel PJ truly inspired and encouraging the students to read. He emphasised on how the college helps in the holistic growth of students and the book exhibition was an apt example of that. He rightly quoted “Today’s Readers are tomorrow’s Leaders”. Fr Emmanuel rested his address pointing out of the glory of print media and how the value of that can never diminish as years go by and also focuses on that this college looks forward for building communities of wisdom and Knowledge.

Smt Santwana Bhattacharya, Resident Editor, Rev Fr Some Zacharia, Director of Library and Research, Chief Librarian, Rev Fr Emmanuel PJ, Mr Harish DN, and Prof Abraham, Faculty of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication were also present.

Objective: The objective of the Book exhibition is in order to educate Students and Faculties towards Library Collections and the New Arrivals.

Outcome: More than 6,000 students and faculties visited and ordered and purchased books from 21 publishers who displayed books from various kinds namely General Books, Social Science, Commerce, Management, Computer Science, English Literature, Kannada Literature, Hindi Literature, Complementary Books, Departmental Books, Donated Books, Encyclopedia, Dictionaries, Yearbook, Bound Volumes and Project Reports from the Library Collections.

Fade In 2018: Intra Collegiate film festival
The film club of Kristu Jayanti College in association with Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized a two-day intra-collegiate festival at Mini Audi III, on 6 & 7 of August 2018. The Chief Guest for the event was Prof. N. Manu Chakravarthy, a National Award Winner and also an academician with an experience of 38 years. “Cinema can’t be held responsible for creating the good or bad character or bring about revolution instead cinema is made as such things already exist in the society,” said Prof. N. Manu Chakravarthy. Contrasting to the fact that movies are a huge investment, he believes that though movies are a huge investment, they aren’t just investment or a source of gaining the invested capital, but is more as it educates of what the society is all about to the people.

Illuminating further, he opined, “Many people have started writing reviews which are of commercial movies, which include some story plot and credits. In art movies, such things are not possible. They help you to theorize and bring into picture things mostly metaphoric by the screenplay and director’s mind.” He also threw some light into the work of Shri Girish Kasarvalli and said “Kasarvalli made characters of strong women, who fight their own dilemma and win as one attractive factor in all his films. Apart from that, it was rain which was present in all his work.” Cinema is that art which is distinct from all other works of art at the same time is not too, it can deal with every fundamental issue of the entire world. The possibilities are endless- diverse representation of the world, he added.

Other dignitaries on the dais were Rev. Fr. Josekutty PD, Principal, Dr. Gopakumar AV, Dean of Humanities, Dr. Juby Thomas, Coordinator film club, Mr. Nithin T Mathew, the student representative. Around 200 Students had the opportunity to watch and discuss 06 Indian and international films.

Lumos 2018: An exhibition of pristine photography!
The 7th edition of Lumos, the annual photography exhibition of Kristu Jayanti College, was held on Thursday, March 1, 2018. Lumos is a platform for the budding photographers of the college to display their talents and gain valuable feedback. The exhibition featured around 400 pictures from numerous talented photographers from the college. The various themes on display were wildlife, street, travel, fashion and other socially relevant themes. “Lumos, as always, was a memorable event that showcased top-notch photography. But what was special about this year was that the majority of the photographs were submitted by gender photographers of the college. This breaks the stereotype of the male photographer and points to a shifting dynamic”, said Prof. Aby Augustine, the Faculty in-charge. The budding photographers of the college were thrilled at the opportunity to showcase their pictures.

‘Fade in', Film Festival
Film and Photography Club of Kristu Jaynti College is organizing a two-day film festival ‘Fade in:’ on July 27 and 28. Shri. Georgekutty AL, Founder Editor of Deep Focus and Secretary of Bangalore Film Society inaugurated the event. ‘Fade in' is an annual event conducted by the Journalism & Mass communication and English Departments of our college to cultivate serious film viewing among our students and also to expose them to artistic films.This year being the 25th death anniversary of legendary film maker Satyajit Ray, ‘Fade in:’ pays a tribute by screening the notable works of Ray, including ‘Pather Panchali’, and ‘Charulatha’. ‘Fade in:’ also plans to screen masterpieces like Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Great Dictator’, Tom Tykwer’s ‘Run Lola Run’, Asghar Farhadi’s ‘Salesman’ and M. Manikandan’s ‘Kakka Muttai’. Around 200 students participated in the programme.
