VAC on Psychosocial and Mental Health Care for Women Facing Gender Based Violence

A five-day Value-Added Course on "Psychosocial and Mental Health Care for Women Facing Gender-Based Violence" was organized by the Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University in collaboration with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) for the II Year MSW students from 10th July to 15th July 2025.

The course, facilitated by Ph.D. scholars and Psychiatric Social Workers from NIMHANS, Bengaluru to provide a deep understanding of the psychosocial impact of violence on women, multigenerational trauma, psychological first aid, and the significant role of social workers in advocating for mental health, safety, and justice. Students were introduced to trauma-informed approaches, case-based learning, and intervention strategies relevant to the current socio-cultural context.

The course was thoughtfully designed with a mix of interactive sessions, reflective discussions, hands-on activities, role plays, and experiential learning components. These sessions helped students engage more meaningfully with the complex realities of gender-based violence while developing empathy, professional boundaries, and effective communication skills.

This initiative reflected the Department of Social Work’s dedication to equipping future social work professionals with a holistic and practical understanding of mental health, trauma care, and gender sensitivity. The course not only enhanced academic learning but also strengthened the personal and professional values essential to the field of social work.
