The session was conducted from 1:40 PM to 3:30 PM with the objective of enhancing students’ understanding of qualitative approaches in social work research.
The resource person for the session was Dr. Victor Prasad, Director of Jireh Consulting & Management Private Limited, Bangalore. During the lecture, he provided valuable insights into the principles and applications of qualitative research, including the importance of understanding social contexts, selecting appropriate qualitative methods, and ensuring rigour in qualitative inquiry. He also shared practical examples from research and consultancy experiences, helping students relate theoretical concepts to real-world research practices.

Department of Social Work Commemorates International Women’s Day with “Give to Gain”

The Department of Social Work, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, commemorated International Women’s Day through a program titled “Give to Gain” on 9 March 2026 at the M1 Auditorium. The event was organized by the II MSW students with the objective of promoting awareness about gender equality, empowerment, and the importance of recognizing the contributions of women in society. The program created a reflective and engaging platform for students to discuss gender issues and celebrate the achievements and resilience of women.
As part of the program, several interactive activities were conducted to encourage participation and critical thinking among students. One of the key activities was the “Gender Web”, where participants formed a web through shared reflections and thoughts on the meaning and significance of Women’s Day. This activity symbolized interconnected experiences and collective responsibility in promoting gender equality. Additionally, students presented chart presentations highlighting various aspects of women’s empowerment, gender roles, and the challenges faced by women in different social contexts.
The program was meaningful and thought-provoking, allowing students to express their perspectives on gender and reflect on their role in building a more inclusive society. The session was delivered by Dr. Candida Preetham, Founder and Director of Manna Trust, Bangalore. The lecture aimed to enhance students’ understanding of mental health concerns and the role of psychiatric social work in addressing the needs of individuals experiencing psychological and developmental challenges.
During the session, Dr. Candida Preetham discussed various aspects of Mental Disorders and the importance of early identification and intervention. She explained the concept of Neurodivergence, highlighting how individuals with conditions such as autism, ADHD, and other developmental differences experience the world differently. She also elaborated on Learning Disabilities, emphasizing the need for inclusive educational and social environments that support individuals with diverse learning abilities. Through practical examples from her professional experience, she explained how psychiatric social workers play a crucial role in assessment, counseling, rehabilitation, and community support for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions.

The resource person for the lecture was Dr. Stany Pancras, Programme Manager at SEBAMA Foundation. During the session, he discussed the concept of Civil Society and its significance in strengthening democratic participation, social justice, and community empowerment. He explained how Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a crucial role in addressing issues such as urban poverty, housing, sanitation, education, and livelihood opportunities in rapidly growing urban environments. The session was delivered by Dr. T.Babu, Professor of Practice, Department of Social Work. The lecture aimed to enhance students’ understanding of behavioural patterns within organizations and to equip them with practical knowledge relevant to workplace communication, teamwork, and professional relationships.
During the session, Dr. T.Babu discussed key concepts of organizational behaviour, particularly focusing on the Johari Window, Transactional Analysis, and Group Dynamics. He explained how the Johari Window model helps individuals develop self-awareness and understand interpersonal relationships within teams. The concept of Transactional Analysis was elaborated through the Parent, Adult, and Child ego states, highlighting how communication styles influence interactions in workplace settings. He also emphasized the importance of group dynamics in promoting teamwork, cooperation, leadership, and effective collaboration in organizational environments.

Inclusive Carnival Promotes Disability Awareness and Empathy on Campus

The Akshadhaa Foundation, in collaboration with Kristu Jayanti University, organised the vibrant and impactful Inclusive Carnival on 23 February 2026 at the Humanities Block Exhibition Area of the university campus. The programme, was designed as an experiential advocacy initiative to promote awareness, empathy, and deeper understanding of disability inclusion among students, faculty, and visitors.
The carnival featured a series of thoughtfully curated experiential zones, including the Neurodiverse Zone, Locomotor Zone, Visual Impairment Zone, and Hearing Impairment Zone. Each zone offered interactive activities and simulations that enabled participants to experience and understand the challenges and everyday realities faced by persons with disabilities. Through guided demonstrations and reflective engagement, the participants were encouraged to move beyond sympathy and develop genuine empathy, sensitivity, and respect for diverse abilities. The experiential nature of the event made it both educational and transformative, allowing individuals to gain first-hand insights into the importance of accessibility and inclusion.
The programme was jointly supported by the Department of Social Work and the Equal Opportunity Cell of the university, reflecting the institution’s continued commitment to promoting inclusive education and equal opportunities. Dr. Dorcas began by unpacking the meaning and significance of the word “tribe”, tracing its historical, cultural, and sociological dimensions. She provided a comprehensive overview of the major tribal communities in India, explaining their state-wise distribution and unique cultural identities. The expert lecture, exclusively conducted for II MSW students, was held from 10:00 AM to 12:10 PM at B404, Admin Block. The session was aimed to equip MSW students with real-world insights into the evolving HR landscape and provide them with practical knowledge that bridges classroom learning and industry practices. The resource person for the session was Shri Santhosh Rao, Associate Vice President (HR), Toyota Industries Engine India Private Limited, Bangalore.
The session commenced with a warm welcome and introduction of the guest speaker. Shri Santhosh Rao began the lecture by highlighting the contemporary challenges and opportunities in the field of Human Resources, emphasizing the growing role of HR in organizational success. His engaging style and practical approach immediately created an interactive atmosphere, encouraging students to reflect on their career aspirations.
Drawing from his vast professional experience, Shri Rao shared valuable insights on talent management, employee engagement, industrial relations, and workplace dynamics. He candidly spoke about the challenges he faced in his career and how resilience and adaptability shaped his journey.

Expert Lecture on the PCOSO Act,2012 (Prevention & Reporting)

The Department of Social Work organized a session on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, focusing on prevention and reporting mechanisms. The session aimed to sensitize students about child protection laws and equip them with knowledge and skills for effective intervention in cases of sexual offences against children. The Objective of the lecture is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the POCSO Act, 2012 and to explore preventive strategies and child protection measures.
The session was started with an introduction to the resource person Ms. Christy J, Advocate and followed by the lecture. The discussion was initiated with the definitions, provisions, and penalties under the Act. She also highlighted on Prevention Strategies: Emphasis on awareness campaigns, community engagement, and creating safe environments for children. The resource person gave an detailed step by step explanation of how to report offences, legal procedures, and the role of social workers. Mr. Christy also shared on Case Studies: Students reviewed real-life scenarios to understand the practical application of the Act and the role of various stakeholders.
The students actively participated, raising queries on ethical dilemmas, confidentiality, and child-centered approaches focusing on Understanding the legal framework protecting children from sexual offences and Importance of early intervention and timely reporting to prevent further harm. And The role of social workers in advocacy, counselling, and facilitating justice for child victims. The session provided crucial insights into child protection laws and highlighted the importance of social work intervention in preventing and addressing child sexual offences. It strengthened students’ awareness and professional responsibility in safeguarding children.

Session on Passion for Profession

The Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, successfully organized a knowledge-enriching session on the topic “Passion for Profession” on 30th July 2025 at the A1 Conference Hall, Admin Block. To inspire and orient first-year MSW students towards developing a deep sense of commitment and passion for the social work profession by understanding its values, challenges, and impact, thereby helping them align their personal motivations with professional ethics and responsibilities.
The first session was graced by the presence by Rev. Fr. Andrews Raja SDB, Faculty Member, Department of Social Work, Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur. Known for his empathetic pedagogy and humanistic approach to teaching, Fr. Andrews delivered a session that blended spiritual wisdom with social work principles, offering a holistic perspective to the eager first-year students. He started by inviting students to reflect on the question, encouraging them to connect with their inner motivations beyond academic expectations or societal pressure.
The second session was conducted by Dr. Janet Parameshwara, a senior and respected social work professional with vast experience in health, development, and women empowerment sectors. Her session focused on helping students find professional passion through ethical alignment, self-awareness, and experiential learning. Dr. Janet opened her talk by stating that passion in social work is not simply about enthusiasm, but about building a life grounded in purpose, integrity, and compassion. Drawing from decades of experience, she shared real-life cases that illustrated the emotional demands of the profession, and how persistence and reflective practice help one overcome fatigue and frustration.
The final session of the day was conducted of Dr. Vasudeva Sharma, Executive Director and Trustee, Child Rights Trust, Bangalore, a renowned figure in the realm of child rights and public advocacy. His session provided a profound and thought-provoking beginning to the lecture series, as he navigated the students through the emotional and professional landscapes of being a social worker. Dr. Vasudeva Sharma began by sharing his personal transformation from a curious young volunteer to a dedicated child rights advocate, emphasizing how professional passion is born not from convenience, but from conviction. He spoke deeply about the realities of working with children in distress, highlighting both the systemic challenges and the fulfilling victories that come with this line of work.
The session was concluded with an appeal for students to see their work as a service to humanity, not just an academic pursuit. The session ended on a deeply moving note, inspiring students to carry forward the values of service, resilience, and compassion.

Reflective Dialogue Session on Human Trafficking and Its Response

The Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, organized a Reflective Dialogue Session on the topic “Human Trafficking and Its Response” for the second-year MSW students. The session was facilitated by Dr. Mathew Daniel, an expert in the field of human rights and social justice.
The objective of the session was to create awareness among the students about the grave issue of human trafficking, its root causes, current trends, and the multidimensional responses required to address it effectively.
Dr. Mathew Daniel, drawing from his extensive experience in research and advocacy, provided an in-depth understanding of the various forms of human trafficking, including trafficking for forced labour, sexual exploitation, organ trade, and child trafficking. He highlighted the socio-economic vulnerabilities that make communities susceptible to trafficking and the gaps in policy implementation that allow this crime to persist.
The session encouraged students to critically reflect on the role of social workers in prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership. Dr. Daniel stressed the need for victim-centered approaches, rehabilitation and reintegration measures, and the importance of inter-sectoral collaboration among law enforcement agencies, NGOs, and the community.
Students actively participated in the dialogue by sharing their perspectives and raising thought-provoking questions about ethical challenges, survivor rights, and the effectiveness of current legal frameworks. Dr. Daniel responded by urging future social work professionals to become advocates for stronger policies, grassroots awareness, and community empowerment.

Orientation for II MSW on Code of Conduct and Curriculum

The Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, organized an Orientation Programme on Code of Conduct and Curriculum for the second-year students of the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme. The session was held with the objective of familiarizing the students with the academic framework, institutional policies, and the expected standards of professional and personal conduct.
The orientation began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Jonas Richard A, Head of the Department, who emphasized the importance of discipline, integrity, and commitment in the field of social work. Faculty members elaborated on the revised curriculum, highlighting the key papers, fieldwork practicum, research project requirements, and co-curricular engagements planned for the academic year.
Special emphasis was placed on the Code of Conduct, which included guidelines on classroom behavior, fieldwork ethics, academic integrity, anti-ragging measures, and the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards plagiarism and misconduct. Students were encouraged to uphold the values of the profession and to maintain decorum within and outside the campus.
An interactive session followed, where students clarified their doubts regarding field placements, research methodology, elective options, and the continuous internal assessment pattern. The faculty addressed queries and motivated students to actively participate in departmental activities, community outreach, and skill-building programmes.

The resource person Dr. Gundappa Devikari, Professor and Head, Department of Social Work, Bengaluru North University is an expert in the field of social work. The session aimed to highlight the socio-economic challenges faced by migrant labourers, including exploitation, lack of access to healthcare, poor living conditions, and social exclusion. was invited as the resource person to shed light on the complexities of migrant labour, their social conditions, and the social work interventions designed to assist them.
The session began with an introduction to the resource person Dr. Gundappa Devikari, an esteemed social worker with years of experience in the field, delivered an engaging and informative lecture. The key points discussed during the session explained how migrant labourers often face marginalization, exploitation, and limited access to basic services. Dr. Devikari elaborated on specific social work methods used to address the challenges faced by migrant workers, including: Social Case Work engaging with individuals to understand their specific challenges and provide personalized interventions. Social Group Work forming support groups to empower migrant labourers, helping them build solidarity and advocate for their rights. Community Organisation creating community-driven initiatives that involve migrant labourers in decision-making processes, improving their living and working conditions. Advocacy and Policy Work pushing for systemic changes to ensure better labour laws, access to healthcare, and improved living conditions for migrant workers.
One of the most significant aspects of the lecture was the emphasis on empowering migrant workers by raising awareness about their rights and giving them a platform to voice their concerns. Dr. Devikari stressed the importance of social workers in bridging the gap between the migrant workers and authorities. He shared real-life examples to demonstrate the harsh working conditions and poor living arrangements they endure.
The lecture was highly interactive, with students actively participating in discussions. Dr. Devikari encouraged students to ask questions and share their thoughts on how social work can improve the conditions of migrant labourers. Several students posed questions about practical approaches to intervening with migrant labourers and dealing with resistance from stakeholders in the process. The Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti College organized an expert lecture Diplomacy in Turbulent Times: Honouring UN Day on 24th October, 2024.The objective of organizing this webinar was to commemorate the birth of the UN charter, on the same date, in the year, 1945. This is a day of global celebration of the UN mission promoting peace, security and human rights development across the world. The lecture was conducted on Virtual mode.
The United Nations (UN) remains the primary global organization addressing issues that cross national borders and cannot be solved by one nation alone. Established to maintain peace, protect human rights, promote justice, and foster economic and social progress. However, the UN and its specialized agencies also work on a variety of activities aimed at enhancing people’s lives globally. The esteemed resource person for this webinar was, Dr. Bernard D’ Sami, a renowned Senior Fellow at Loyola Institute of Social Science Training and Research (LISSTAR).
Ms. Angelin, student coordinator invited Dr. Bernard to take over the session. Dr. Bernard started the session with a brief history of the UN, tracing down the lane of its formation, establishment, and growth over the years. He talked about the initiation of the League of Nations after the 1st World War, and how it was later developed into the United Nations, after the 2nd World War. He talked about the various principles by which UN functions, He also mentioned about the role played by significant dignitaries in the creation and functioning of UN. He also brought up the 6 organs of the UN, wherein he talked about the United Nations General Assembly, United Nations Security Council, Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. He pointed out the three major pillars of UN, which are: 1). Maintaining World Peace; 2). Protection and Promotion of Human Rights; and 3). Working towards achieving the MDGs and SDGs. He ended his talk by suggesting the students to go through different reports and preambles pledged or presented by the different specialized agencies of UN.
