He also discussed reliable data sources and policy options to ensure fairness and innovation in the labour market, with special reference to Vietnam. The Department of Economics, School of Commerce, Accounting and Finance, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), organised an Expert Talk on “Blue Economy: India’s Pathway to Sustainable, Secure, and Resilient Economy” on 3 February 2026. The programme was held at 10:00 AM in A1 Audi, Admin Block. The session was delivered by Prof. A. Subramanyam Raju, Professor, Centre for South Asian Studies, Pondicherry University, who served as the resource person. In his talk, the speaker highlighted the significance of the Blue Economy in promoting sustainable use of ocean resources while ensuring economic growth and national security.
He also emphasised India’s strategic maritime potential, policy initiatives, and challenges related to coastal development and environmental conservation. The talk provided valuable academic insights and encouraged critical thinking among students on contemporary economic and environmental issues. The programme witnessed active participation and interaction from students and faculty members. A total of 131 students attended the programme, making the event a meaningful and successful academic engagement.

Expert Talk “Upcoming Union Budget 2026 - An Academic Exploration”

The Department of Economics, School of Commerce, Accounting, and Finance, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, successfully organised an Expert Talk on “Upcoming Union Budget 2026: An Academic Exploration” on January 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM for M.Sc. Economics students(60 students). The session was delivered by Dr. Nisha Nujumudeen, Deputy Director and Associate Professor of Economics in the Department of Public Policy at Crescent University, Chennai. The objective of the programme was to provide students with an academic and policy-oriented understanding of the Union Budget, focusing on its macroeconomic framework, fiscal priorities, and sectoral implications. Dr. Nujumudeen offered an insightful analysis of the expectations surrounding the Union Budget 2026, highlighting key aspects such as fiscal consolidation, public expenditure patterns, taxation reforms, social sector allocations, and growth-oriented policy measures. She also discussed the role of the budget in addressing contemporary economic challenges, including inflation management, employment generation, and sustainable development. The session effectively linked theoretical concepts taught in the classroom with real-world fiscal policymaking. The programme was interactive, with students actively participating in the discussion and raising questions related to budgetary priorities, public finance, and policy trade-offs. The expert clarified doubts and encouraged critical thinking among students, thereby enhancing their analytical and applied understanding of economic policy. The expert talk was highly informative and academically enriching. It helped students gain deeper insights into the Union Budget as a vital policy instrument and strengthened their ability to critically evaluate fiscal decisions. The Department of Economics, School of Commerce, Accounting and Finance, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) organised an Expert Talk on “Smart Money: Investor Awareness Programme” on 28th October 2025 at 3:00 PM through Zoom. The session was exclusively conducted for the students of I & II M.Sc. Economics. The resource person for the session was Dr. Svetlana Tatuskar, Director of Kohinoor Business School, Mumbai, and a SMART Trainer with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The session aimed to enhance students’ understanding of financial literacy and investor awareness in the modern economic landscape. Dr. Tatuskar highlighted the importance of financial prudence and smart investment decisions, emphasizing the role of disciplined saving, risk management, and diversification in building long-term wealth. She discussed various aspects of financial markets, investment avenues, and regulatory mechanisms that safeguard investors. The talk also focused on how young investors can align their financial goals with sustainable investment strategies. Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, Dr. Tatuskar inspired participants to adopt a structured approach to financial planning. The session helped students understand the fundamental principles of investment, financial products, and the significance of informed decision-making in achieving financial security. Expert Talk - Invest Smart: Financial Awareness Programme

The Department of Economics, School of Commerce, Accounting and Finance organised an expert talk on “Invest Smart: Financial Awareness Programme” on 24th October 2025 at 11:00 AM through Zoom. The session was held for the students of I. B.Sc. Applied Economics, II &III B A Applied Economics (40 Students). Dr. Svetlana Tatuskar, Director Kohinoor Business School, Mumbai, and SMART Trainer SEBI, was the resource person for the session. The class was part of the NSE’s Pratham Level 1 financial literacy programme, which aspires to empower young students with basic skills in financial planning and investment. Dr. Tatuskar opened the discussion, which aimed at making the students Financially Literate and early planners. She explained that some money can be saved only by spending it in the right direction of use or consumption. She promoted three basic Sutras of financial preparedness: disciplined saving for emergencies (anytime), family goals (5–7 years), and retirement (30-40 years). She discussed the risk and reward matrix, explaining how risk and return often move in a positive correlation. In addition, she elaborated some financial products for short-term, medium-term term and long-term goals--savings account, deposits, mutual funds, stocks, debentures, and insurance (medical and life). It’s not about how much you invest; it’s about how long you invest,” she emphasized. Structure, pooling of risk for retail investors, and fund managers were also discussed in the context of mutual funds. It was a very informative and insightful session, helping the students become financially aware and responsible with their investments.

The Department of Economics, School of Commerce, Accounting and Finance, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), organised an expert talk titled “Econometric Complexities: Diagnosis and Solutions” on 15th October 2025 at 10 AM to 12 Noon in M3 Auditorium, Main Block. The session was designed for students of B.Sc. Applied Economics and I & II MSc Economics(80 students), aiming to deepen their understanding of advanced econometric techniques and their practical applications. The resource person for the session was Dr. Jean Maria George, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Christ College (Autonomous), Irinjalakuda, Kerala. With her extensive academic and research experience, Dr. George provided valuable insights into the challenges faced in econometric modelling, diagnostic testing, and solution strategies. The session covered key topics such as multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, autocorrelation, and model specification errors, equipping students with analytical tools to critically evaluate empirical research. The interactive format encouraged student engagement through case-based discussions and real-world examples. This academic initiative enriched the participants’ methodological competence and fostered a deeper appreciation for the role of econometrics in economic research and policy analysis.

The Department of Economics organised the Alumni Lecture Series I on “Transition from Campus to Corporate- Navigating the Corporate Journey” on 14th October 2025 at 1:40 PM in H501, 5th Floor-Humanities Block. The session was led by Mr. Mohit Lakshminarayan Kapse
Analyst-Audit Partnership, Bengaluru, and an alumna of the MA Economics (Batch 2023–2025) . The guest speaker Mr.Mohit, a distinguished alumnus of the department, shared first-hand experiences about adapting to the corporate environment, understanding workplace dynamics, and developing essential soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. The lecture highlighted the importance of professionalism, time management, and continuous learning in sustaining career growth. The speaker also emphasized how economics graduates can apply their analytical and critical thinking skills in diverse sectors such as finance, consulting, research, and data analytics. The lecture concluded with a message encouraging students to embrace adaptability and a lifelong learning mindset as key traits for success in a rapidly evolving corporate landscape. The session was highly enriching, fostering a strong connection between alumni and current students, and reaffirming the department’s commitment to preparing its graduates for successful and fulfilling careers. International Lecture Series on Behavioral Economics and the Pursuit of Happiness

The Department of Economics- School of Commerce, Accounting and Finance organized yet another insightful session under its Talk Across Time Zones (International Lecture Series) on the 19th of September 2025. The lecture, titled “Behavioural Economics and the Pursuit of Happiness”, was designed specifically for the first and second-year M.Sc. Economics students. The event brought together academic curiosity, global perspectives, and a much-needed exploration of how economics intersects with human behaviour and well-being.
The guest speaker for the session was Mr. Joseph Thomas, a distinguished alumnus of Kristu Jayanti University (EPS 2019–2022 Batch) and currently a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario, Canada. His academic journey from Bengaluru to Canada and his professional role in therapeutic recreation and mental health added a unique dimension to the lecture, blending theoretical insights with practical applications. He highlighted how individuals often make choices that deviate from rationality due to biases, emotions, and contextual influences. Through relatable examples, he explained the concepts of loss aversion, framing effects, and choice overload, linking them directly to everyday life decisions such as consumption, savings, and lifestyle habits. Mr. Thomas emphasized that while income and financial security play significant roles in well-being, they are not the sole determinants of happiness. To make the session more engaging and to reinforce learning, a quiz was conducted at the end of the lecture. The quiz tested students’ grasp of the key concepts discussed during the session and provided an interactive way to assess their understanding. The active participation in the quiz reflected the enthusiasm of the students and their keen interest in applying behavioural economics beyond the classroom. The lecture concluded with a reflection on the importance of pursuing economics not merely as a subject of theories and numbers, but as a discipline with the power to enhance the quality of life. Mr. Thomas encouraged students to remain curious, empathetic, and open to interdisciplinary approaches in their academic and professional journeys. Overall, the session was a resounding success, leaving students with a deeper understanding of how behavioural economics can shape individual choices, public policy, and collective well-being. It also served as a proud moment for the department to welcome back its alumnus, who is making meaningful contributions on an international platform.

ECONOMIA 2025

The Department of Economics, School of Commerce, Accounting and Finance, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), inaugurated ECONOMIA 2025, its intrauniversity fest, on 9th September 2025 at the H2 Auditorium, Humanities Block. The fest, themed “Leveraging AI to Shape the Economy”, was exclusively designed for undergraduate economics students to foster intellectual growth and creativity. Fr. Dr. Augustine George, Vice Chancellor, delivered the presidential address, highlighting the importance of academic initiatives in preparing students to become future leaders and innovators. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Smrite Goudhaman, Pre-Sales Solution Leader, Datamatics, Bengaluru, who emphasized the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in all spheres of life and urged students to embrace emerging technological opportunities. Her address inspired participants to think critically about how AI can reshape economies and societies. The festival featured four major competitive events, attended by 123 students: Economic Policy Formation, Debate, Just A Minute (JAM), and Quiz—each designed to enhance students’ analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills. The Economic Policy Formation event allowed students to design innovative policies to tackle contemporary challenges, while the Debate encouraged logical reasoning and the articulation of diverse perspectives. JAM tested spontaneity and quick thinking, whereas the Quiz assessed knowledge of economics, AI, and current affairs. Each event saw enthusiastic participation, reflecting the energy and intellectual curiosity of the student community. The fest provided a vibrant platform for applying classroom knowledge in practical and engaging ways. ECONOMIA 2025 successfully combined academic rigor with creativity, leaving students motivated to explore the future of economics in an AI-driven world.

The resource person for the session was Dr Manjunath M. S., Faculty, Kristu Jayanti College of Law. The programme was attended by first-year BSc Applied Economics students and MSc Economics students. Dr Manjunath emphasised the importance of mutual respect among peers and highlighted the ethical dimensions of preventing ragging in academic institutions. He also shared legal insights and practical measures to create a safe and inclusive campus environment. The session was highly interactive and left students more aware of and committed to promoting an anti-ragging culture.

The First year BSc Applied Economics and MSc Economics students participated in the event. The expert talk was conducted as an interactive session, proving highly beneficial for the students. The speaker highlighted the importance of adapting to evolving industry requirements in the era of Artificial Intelligence, thereby creating awareness among the participants about the skills and competencies needed for future employability. The event received positive feedback from the participants, with the majority expressing satisfaction with the interactive and informative nature of the session.

The expert talk, titled “Breaking Barriers, Building Legacies: The Rise of Women in Leadership,” was delivered by Dr. Marlene Morais, Advisor & Former Principal, Guru Nanak College, Chennai. The session was conducted in a hybrid mode, with an in-person gathering at the H1 Auditorium, Humanities Block, and online participation via Zoom. The talk was scheduled from 10:30 am to 11:30 am and witnessed active engagement from students and faculty members. The session commenced with a warm welcome address, emphasizing the significance of International Women’s Day in celebrating the achievements of women across the globe. Dr. Marlene Morais shared insightful perspectives on the challenges women face in leadership roles and the strategies to overcome them. The resource person was Mr. Aji Varghese, founder-Indus optics and Malgudi Arts, Bangalore. The emphasis of the session was on critical abilities needed in the business sector for prospective entrepreneurs. Effective communication, public speaking, financial management, networking, adaptability, leadership, and computer literacy were among the essential abilities. The resource person emphasized the value of teamwork, financial management, leadership, public speaking, and communication. During the interactive Q&A session, students were able to ask questions and communicate with the resource person, which led to good remarks regarding their entrepreneurial pathway.
