Laboratories

Physics lab:

The Department of Physics is equipped with sophisticated instruments to conduct practical sessions for undergraduate students. Physics lab is adequately equipped with advanced and digital instruments like Spectrometer to calculate the wavelength of visible light and determine the refractive index of the material, conventional Travelling Microscope to calculate Young’s modulus of the material of the beam, digital Stoke’s method to find the viscosity of any viscous liquid, semiconductor LASER devices to find the wavelength of light and Ballistic Galvanometer to find figure of merit. With the use of a spectrometer, the students will be able to calculate the wavelength of visible light and to determine the refractive index of the material.

Electronics Lab:

The Electronics Laboratory of the university is a well-equipped facility designed to provide students with hands-on experience in basic and applied electronics. The laboratory supports practical courses in analog electronics, digital electronics, microprocessors, and microcontrollers and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

The laboratory is equipped with essential electronic instruments such as regulated DC power supplies, analog and digital multimeters, cathode ray oscilloscopes (CRO) / digital storage oscilloscopes (DSO), function generators, and breadboards. A wide range of electronic components including resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, operational amplifiers, logic gate ICs, and sensors are available for experimental work. The lab also includes soldering stations, PCB kits, and computer systems with simulation software.

In addition, the laboratory is equipped with advanced trainer kits such as the 8085 and 8086 microprocessor kits and 8051/8055 microcontroller trainer kits, IoT development platforms such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and NodeMCU/ESP-based kits. Various IoT-related apparatus including temperature, humidity, gas, motion, light, and proximity sensors; relay modules; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules; and cloud-based data monitoring tools enable students to design and implement smart and connected systems.

St. Chavara Centre for Advanced Research in Materials Science:

The Materials Science Laboratory provides a strong experimental foundation for postgraduate and doctoral training in Physics with specialisation in Materials Science. The laboratory is well equipped with facilities for materials synthesis, processing, and thermal treatment, including high-precision analytical balances, double distillation units, hot plate magnetic stirrers, probe sonicators, hot air ovens, muffle furnaces, and a high-temperature silicon carbide furnace.

Supporting facilities such as UV chambers and pH meters enable controlled chemical and photo-assisted studies relevant to functional and advanced materials. A dedicated computational workstation complements experimental work through data analysis and modelling.
