Expert Lecture on Media Research

On February 21, 2026, the Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be) University organised an expert lecture on Media Research for the students of IV Semester MA Journalism & Mass Communication and II Semester MA Media & Communication.
The session was delivered by Professor Varghese P. A., a noted researcher and Chairman of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kuvempu University, Shimoga. In his lecture on media research, he highlighted the importance of methodological rigour, ethical responsibility, and the social relevance of research in the contemporary media landscape.
Professor Varghese emphasised the need to refine research questions, strengthen theoretical frameworks, and enhance analytical clarity in scholarly work. The interactive session encouraged critical thinking and motivated students to approach research as a continuous and evolving learning process.
The expert lecture concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session on various aspects of media research.

Guest Lecture on Feature Writing

The Department of Media Studies, Kristu Jayanti University, organized a guest on feature writing for I BA MC students from 27 January 2026 to 30 January 2026. Mr. Pradeep Nair, former News Editor, The Hindu Bangalore addressed the students with an objective of enhancing their understanding of feature writing as an important journalistic form. The session focused on introducing the fundamentals of feature writing, including its structure, style, and relevance in contemporary media. Students were guided on how feature stories differ from hard news, with emphasis on creativity, human interest, and narrative techniques.
A total of 25 students actively participated in the session and engaged in discussions related to storytelling, research, and presentation of features. The interactive nature of the session encouraged students to clarify doubts and develop a deeper appreciation for long-form journalistic writing. “The session was very informative and beneficial, as it provided us with strong practical knowledge on how to write an effective feature story,” said Angela Elsa Sanil, I BA MC student.

Expert Lecture on Contemporary Paradigm Shifts in Media and Journalism

The Department of Media Studies organized an expert lecture on 20 August 2025 titled “Contemporary Paradigm Shifts in Media and Journalism” was delivered by Mr. T.R. Sathish Kumar, Special Correspondent & Chief of Bureau, Deccan Herald, Mysuru. Drawing from his extensive professional experience, Mr. Sathish Kumar highlighted the rapid transformations in the media industry, emphasizing how technology, audience behavior, and global socio-political changes are reshaping the practice of journalism. He also discussed the challenges of misinformation, the rise of digital platforms, and the need for ethical, responsible reporting in the current media environment. The session provided students with valuable insights into the dynamic nature of journalism and encouraged them to critically engage with emerging trends in the field.

Expert Lecture Provides Journalism Students with Real-World Reporting and Writing Skills

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti College hosted an expert lecture on “Effective Reporting and Report Writing” on April 25, 2025, by Ms. Sujyothi N Prasad, CEO, content strategist, and founder of MyStyle Communications. Ms. Sujyothi spoke to journalism students about the developing media ecosystem and the necessity for journalists to adapt to changing audience expectations while maintaining ethical standards. She underlined the importance of striking a balance between using technology and traditional reporting methods, particularly in print media, and encouraged students to use a conversational tone on digital platforms.
The session comprehends key journalistic skills like accuracy, neutrality, research, time management, and good storytelling. Ms. Sujyothi also helped students write press releases and advertorials, incorporate data and visuals into reports, and find lucrative internships. The event culminated with an interesting Q & A session with academics and students, which provided practical advice and motivation to aspiring journalists. The lecture proved to be an enriching experience, providing attendees with both academic and industry-ready skills.

Expert lecture- Tobacco Consumption and Cultivation-Exposing the Scandal

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti College organized a insightful expert lecture on “Tobacco Consumption and Cultivation-Exposing the Scandal” for I & II MA JMC, I, II & III VISCOM & I BA JMC students. The resource person for the event was Mr. S J Chander, Founder, Foundation for Sustainable Health India. Mr. Chander, an activist in the field of public campaign of Anti-tobacco consumption. Mr. Chander, Explain the process of tobacco cultivation, from planting to harvesting and processing. He, discuss the environmental impact of tobacco farming, including deforestation, soil degradation, and water pollution. Mr, Chander, explore the economic aspects of tobacco cultivation, including its role in livelihoods and the tobacco industry. The lecture concluded with an interactive session where students engaged with Mr. Chander in taking the clarity regarding the Government policies in controlling the tobacco products in the market.

Expert lecture - Research Philosophy

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti College organized an insightful expert lecture on “Research Philosophy” for II and IV semester MA JMC students. The resource person for the event was Prof. Varghese P A, Chairman, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Kuvempu University. Prof. Varghese, an experienced academician in the field of research, revealed how philosophical perspectives influence research questions, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques. He explained the ethical considerations related to research philosophy, such as the role of values and the potential impact of research on participants. He also encourages critical reflection on the researcher's own assumptions and biases, fostering a more nuanced and rigorous approach to research. The lecture concluded with an interactive session where students engaged with Prof. Varghese, asking questions about the ethics of and trends in mass media research.

The Department of Media Studies organised an expert lecture on Magazine Writing for IV semester MA Journalism and Mass Communication students on March 05, 2025 at 10:00 am in H501, Humanities Block. The resource person for the session was Ms. Remya Stinu, Former HoD, Department of Communicative English, St. Teresa’s College, Kochi, Kerala, who shared valuable insights on writing for magazines. Ms. Remya provided an in-depth understanding of magazine writing, focusing on its unique structure and language. She discussed the key differences in writing style, format, and approach compared to other forms of journalism. She emphasized how magazine writing allows for a more creative and narrative-driven approach, blending information with storytelling to engage readers.
She also elaborated on the structural elements of magazine writing, such as compelling leads, well-crafted subheadings, and engaging conclusions. She highlighted the role of tone and voice in magazine articles, differentiating between formal, conversational, and feature-oriented styles. Additionally, she discussed how magazine content is tailored to specific audiences, balancing depth with readability. The session was highly interactive, with students participating in discussions on writing techniques, audience engagement, and content structuring. Through practical examples, Ms. Remya illustrated how different magazine genres require varied approaches, helping students refine their writing skills. The resource person for the session was Ms. Priyamvadha Balaram, Director - Content & Community Partnerships, Mondee, Bengaluru, who shared valuable industry insights. Ms. Priyamvadha provided an in-depth understanding of magazine journalism, discussing its evolution and significance in the modern media landscape. She elaborated on the different types of magazines, distinguishing between general interest and special audience magazines. She highlighted how magazine journalism allows for in-depth storytelling, rich visual presentation, and a more personalized connection with readers.
She also provided an overview of the magazine industry in India, analyzing trends, readership patterns, and the growing digital shift in the sector. She discussed the editorial process in magazine publishing, focusing on content curation, feature selection, and audience engagement strategies. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of understanding target demographics and maintaining a unique editorial voice. The session was highly interactive, with students engaging in discussions on magazine content, layout, and editorial strategies. Expert Session & Documentary Screening

On March 12, 2025, the Department of Media Studies organized an expert session and documentary screening featuring renowned documentary filmmaker Ms. Deepa Dhanraj as the resource person. The session included the screening of her acclaimed documentary Invoking Justice (2011), which highlights the remarkable efforts of a group of Muslim women from Pudukottai village in Tamil Nadu who established a female Jamaat to advocate for women's rights and freedom within their community. Following the screening, an engaging interactive session allowed students to delve deeper into the world of documentary filmmaking. They posed insightful questions regarding the challenges Ms. Dhanraj faced as a filmmaker, the technical aspects of crafting a documentary, and the inspiration behind her work. The session provided students with practical insights into the field of documentary production, making it an engaging and thought-provoking experience that was well received by all attendees.

Expert Lecture on Mental Health: Reboot and Refresh

March 11, 2025 - To tackle the emerging issue of phone addiction and ensure mindfulness, an expert lecture on Mental Health: Reboot and Refresh was organised for the students of MAJMC II Semester. The resource persons, Dr. Sruthi Sivaraman, Head of the Department, Department of Psychology, and Ms. Moksha Balakrishnan, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, accompanied by a student Carnatic singer delivered the expert lecture. The session began with a series of interactive games meant to inculcate team spirit and productive interaction among the participants. These games acted as an icebreaker, opening the platform for intense interaction in the themes of the session.
Dr. Sruthi Sivaraman presented a brief talk on how music therapy can help in mental wellbeing and can be used as a therapy. Ms. Moksha Balakrishnan played the violin and Carnatic vocalist Atharva sang traditional ragas, filling the session with soulful melodies. The therapy was centered on making participants aware of their emotions, providing a calming experience to quieten the mind and relieve stress. The smooth combination of instrumentals and vocals produced a peaceful ambiance, underlining the importance of conscious relaxation in the digital era.

Ms. Priyamvadha discussed the market for feature and editorial writing, covering columns, book reviews, film reviews, and theatre reviews. She emphasized the relevance of feature writing in modern media, explaining how it allows for deeper storytelling, creativity, and audience engagement. She also highlighted the role of editorial writing in shaping public opinion and the growing demand for compelling, well-researched content across platforms. She differentiated news reporting from feature writing, focusing on the importance of strong narrative techniques, compelling leads, and structured storytelling. She also provided guidance on freelancing, pitching ideas to editors, and building a portfolio for aspiring feature writers.

Expert Lecture on Travel Writing

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized an expert lecture on travel writing by Ms. Priyamvadha Balaram, Director of Content & Community Partnerships at Mondee, Bengaluru. The session was conducted on January 27, 2025 from 11:00 am in the H1 auditorium and was attended by nearly 90 students, including participants from II Semester BA Journalism and Mass Communication and II & IV Semester MA Journalism and Mass Communication programmes. Ms. Priyamvadha provided valuable insights into the art of travel writing, covering essential tips, different types of travel content, and monetization strategies. She highlighted various career opportunities in the field and encouraged students to start small through freelancing on multiple digital platforms. She also emphasized the ethical aspects of travel writing, stressing the importance of authenticity and responsible storytelling.
The session was enriched with personal anecdotes from her extensive experience in the industry, making the lecture both engaging and informative. The event concluded with an interactive Q & A session, where students actively participated, seeking practical advice on excelling in travel writing.
