Mitrotsava 2026 Strengthens Alumni Bonds at Department of Media Studies

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, organised Mitrotsava 2026 – Alumni Meet on February 28, 2026, at Conference Hall H1. The event brought together alumni, faculty, and administrators for a meaningful reunion marked by reflection and forward-thinking dialogue. The programme began with a welcome address by the alumni Coordinator, followed by an address by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, who highlighted the University’s academic achievements and its continued emphasis on curriculum enhancement, skill-based learning, and infrastructure development. Alumni actively shared constructive feedback, suggesting longer internship durations, strengthened placement support, and greater emphasis on English language proficiency to better prepare students for industry demands.
The Head of the Department presented the evolving curriculum and introduced newly launched programmes, including BA Media and Communication, BSc Visual Communication, and triple major combinations designed to meet emerging media industry trends. Alumni were also taken on a guided tour of the state-of-the-art Media Lab, showcasing advanced production and editing facilities that support experiential learning. The meet concluded with an engaging open interaction session, where alumni shared professional experiences and cherished memories, reaffirming their bond with the institution. Mitrotsava 2026 stood as a celebration of connection, growth, and the enduring spirit of the department.

Media Research Symposium 2026

On February 21, 2026, the Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be) University hosted a Media Research Symposium for the students of IV Semester MA Journalism & Mass Communication and II Sem MA Media & Communication. The event aimed to provide a scholarly platform for post-graduate students to present their research papers, encouraging academic dialogue and critical engagement.
The symposium featured Professor Varghese PA, a renowned researcher and Chairman of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kuvempu University, Shimoga as the Resource Person. In his address, he emphasised the importance of methodological rigour, ethical constraints and the social relevance of media research in contemporary society.
Participants presented research papers on diverse topics, including digital media trends, content analysis, media ethics and audience behaviour. Professor Varghese provided constructive feedback, guiding students on refining research questions, strengthening theoretical frameworks and improving analytical clarity.
The interactive session fostered critical thinking and encouraged students to view research as a continuous learning process. The symposium concluded with an engaging discussion, leaving participants motivated to enhance their scholarly work and contribute meaningfully to media research and practice.

Professor of Practice Session on Feature Writing

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) organized a specialized academic session under the "Professor of Practice" initiative. The event featured Mr. Pradeep Nair, Former News Editor of The Hindu, Bengaluru, as the guest expert.
Held across two days, February 2nd and 6th February , 2026 at the Humanities Block, the session focused on the nuances of Feature Writing. Mr. Nair leveraged his extensive industry experience to provide students with practical insights into storytelling, narrative structures, and the transition from hard news to engaging features.

Journalism club hosts Prerana

The Department of Journalism at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be) University organized Prerana on February 20, an interactive session aimed at preparing undergraduate Media Studies students for their upcoming internships. The initiative sought to equip students with practical insights and professional guidance as they transition from classroom learning to industry exposure.
Final-year post graduate students who had recently completed internships at reputed media organizations across India shared first-hand experiences with their juniors. They offered practical suggestions on skill development, identifying and mastering relevant software, strengthening portfolios, and actively engaging in production-related work to enhance employability. The speakers emphasized the importance of adaptability, networking, and maintaining professional discipline during internships.
The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, during which students sought clarity on internship application procedures, eligibility criteria for paid internships, expected working hours, nature of assigned tasks, and the possibility of securing full-time employment offers.
Prerana served as a valuable peer-learning platform, fostering mentorship and encouraging students to approach internships with confidence and preparedness.

Department of Media Studies, DeKlass Film Club Hosts Girish Kasaravalli Film Festival

The Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, through its DeKlass Film Club, successfully organized the Girish Kasaravalli Film Festival on 23 January 2025 at H2 Auditorium, commencing at 9:00 AM.
The festival was curated to introduce students to the cinematic legacy of acclaimed filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, with a focus on socially relevant narratives and artistic storytelling. As part of the screening, three National Film Award–winning films—Ghatashraddha, Hasina, and Koormavatara—were showcased.
The screenings witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, who engaged attentively with the films and actively contributed to the post-screening discussions. The interactive sessions reflected critical thinking, with students sharing perspectives on themes such as social reform, gender, marginalization, and narrative realism—key elements characteristic of Kasaravalli’s cinema.
The Girish Kasaravalli Film Festival concluded on a highly positive note, reaffirming DeKlass Film Club’s commitment to promoting film literacy, critical viewing, and experiential learning among media students.

Technical Training on Data Visualisation using MS Excel
Date: 17 January 2026
The Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti University (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, successfully organised technical training titled “Data Visualization using MS Excel” on 17 January 2026 at the H1 Lab, Humanities Block.
The workshop was conducted for IV semester BA Media and Communication students (25 students in total), to strengthen their practical understanding of data visualisation using MS Excel, an essential skill for data journalism and media industry.
The training was led by Dr Ashwini Ramesh, Assistant Professor at the department. It focused on data scraping, data entry, cleaning and formatting, analysis and visualization. Training followed an interactive and practice-based approach, and was well received by the participants. Session was found to be highly informative and relevant to the media industry needs.

Media Studies Students Win Overall Championship at POPCOMM 3.0
Date: 15 & 16 December 2025
Students of the Department of Media Studies, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), won the Overall Championship at the Inter-University Media Fest – POPCOMM 3.0, organised by CHRIST University, Bengaluru, on 15th and 16th December 2025.
The winning team comprised Heba Mary John, Anisha Ishita Barla, Tanya Kanojiya, Umm Ul Khulsum, Manu Sonakiya, Aishwarya Vijay Kumar, Althea Josephine Sandys, Aradhika Upadhyaya, Gauri R Bidare, and Nikita Daisy, from IV Semester BA Journalism and Mass Communication and IV Semester BSc Visual Communication, who showcased outstanding creativity and media skills across various competitive events.

Awareness Session on Substance Abuse

The Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti University, Bengaluru, organized an awareness session on Substance Abuse on 24th October 2025 at 3:30 PM. The session was conducted for all Media Studies students with the objective of educating them on the growing issue of substance abuse and its impact on individual well-being and society at large.
The resource person for the session was Dr. Divya Hegde, MBBS, MD, PDF, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, St. John’s Medical College Hospital, Bengaluru. With her extensive expertise and experience in the field of mental health, Dr. Hegde enlightened the students on the psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of substance abuse. She highlighted the causes, consequences, and preventive measures related to addiction, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness among youth.
Dr. Hegde discussed the early signs of addiction, coping strategies, and the importance of family and peer support. She encouraged students to maintain healthy habits, seek help when needed, and spread awareness within their communities. The interactive session engaged students through discussions and questions, making it both informative and impactful. It motivated participants to make mindful lifestyle choices and understand the seriousness of substance abuse. The Department of Media Studies thanked Dr. Divya Hegde for her valuable insights and efforts in promoting mental health awareness among youth.

Department of Media Studies Releases ‘Campus Courier’
Date: 16 October 2025
The Campus Courier was released by Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bangalore on 16 October 2025. The inaugural issue of Volume 11 was formally released by Dr. Gopakumar A V, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, who presented the first copy of the newsletter to Mr Aby Augustine, Head, Department of Media Studies.
Following the release, Dr. Gopakumar A V addressed the students and faculty. He spoke a few words on the newsletter, congratulating the student team for their initiative and quality of work. He emphasized the importance of such platforms in providing students with practical exposure and a voice to report on community happenings.
The Campus Courier showcases the journalistic and design skills of the students of I MA Media and Communication, with its first issue covering topics ranging from civic issues in Bengaluru to feature stories in a refreshed format featuring letter sized four pages newsletter. The launch was a proud moment for the department, celebrating student creativity and practical learning.

Student Presentation on “Shift in Frames: Transitions in Premiere Pro”

The Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti University, successfully organised a student presentation titled “Shift in Frames: Transitions in Premiere Pro” on 16th October 2025 at H307, Humanities Block.
The session was facilitated by R Kishore (22VICM38) and Emil Seby (23VCMA17) from V BA Visual Communication. The facilitators provided an engaging and practical demonstration on different types of transitions in Adobe Premiere Pro, highlighting their creative use in storytelling and film editing.
Students from V BA Visual Communication actively participated in the presentation, engaging in meaningful discussions and clarifying technical doubts. The interactive approach of the facilitators encouraged peer-to-peer learning, making the session both informative and dynamic. The event concluded on a positive note with participants appreciating the hands-on learning experience and expressing enthusiasm to apply the techniques in their upcoming projects.

Film Screening of “Metropolis”

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Media Studies, in association with the Deklass Film Club, organized a film screening of Fritz Lang’s classic Metropolis on Saturday, 27thd September 2025. The event was conducted for Postgraduate Media Studies students, who engaged deeply with the film and actively participated in a reflective discussion session afterward. The conversation emphasized the film’s ground-breaking visual style, themes of class struggle, and its cultural significance, fostering critical appreciation of German Expressionist cinema as an art form.

Teaching practice Session
Date: 19 September 2025
The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti University organized a Teaching Practice Session on "Non-Verbal Communication and Its Significance in Everyday Life" for I BA MC students, conducted by III MA JMC students under the mentorship of Dr. Juby Thomas, Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies on September 19, 2025. The session began with insights into gestures and their communicative value, followed by interactive group discussions that promoted collaboration. Various aspects of non-verbal communication, such as physical appearance, facial expressions, oculesics, haptics, vocalics, and proxemics, were explored using real-life examples, film clips, and cultural performances like Bharatanatyam and Kathakali. Students also learned about psychological theories, including Joe Navarro’s body language concepts and expectancy violation theory. The session emphasized how non-verbal cues influence identity, emotions, and interpersonal communication. It concluded with a Q&A and reflections from participants, highlighting the effectiveness of the student facilitators. Dr. Juby Thomas concluded the session by acknowledging the efforts of the teaching assistants and highlighting the session’s role in developing confident communicators and future media professionals.

The Releasing Ceremony of ‘Zoom’ Magazine and ‘Inkspire’ Newsletter
Date: 19 September 2025
On September 19, 2025, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) marked the launch of ‘Zoom’ Magazine and ‘Inkspire’ Newsletter. Zoom is a student-led Magazine created by the second-year MA Journalism and Mass Communication students, while the undergraduate students of the Media Studies Department contributed to the Inkspire newsletter. Both these publications were released by Rev. Fr. Joshy Mathew, CHRO, Director of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University).
Fr. Joshy Mathew appreciated the efforts taken by the students in successfully publishing both these publications. He highlighted the importance of providing opportunities to Media students and implementing their skill-set. He also appreciated the impeccable quality and content of both, Zoom Magazine and Inkspire Newsletter. He concluded his speech by stressing on these publications being a platform for students to develop their ideas, writing and designing skills.

KJU Mirror Relaunch
Date: 25 August 2025
The KJU Mirror was relaunched by Department of Media Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bangalore on 25 August 2025 at 11:00 am in H504, with the release of Volume 9, Issue 1 of the newsletter brought out by MA Media and Communication students. The issue was formally released by Dr. Gopakumar A.V., Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, who presented the first copy of the newsletter to Fr. Joshy Mathew, Director, School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Both Fr. Joshy Mathew and Dr. Gopakumar A.V. appreciated the dedicated efforts of the students and faculty members in bringing out the publication. They also highlighted the significance of writing, publishing, and continually refining the craft of expression through such platforms.
The newsletter, earlier known as KJC Mirror has returned in a refreshed format featuring A3-sized front and back pages, and presenting a mix of hard news, book and movie reviews, and feature articles. The publication now follows a five-column layout, enhancing both readability and design. The relaunch of the KJU Mirror marks another milestone in fostering a culture of creativity, critical thinking, and academic engagement within the university community.

Placement Orientation and Training Program

The Department of Media Studies and the Centre for Employability and Corporate Relations (CECR) at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), organized a ‘Placement Orientation and Training Program’ for fifth semester BA Visual Communication students. The session was conducted on August -25, 2025.
The seminar was led by Prof. Sen B. Mathews, Director of the Centre for Employment and Career Relations (CECR) at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University). Professor Mathews provided a thorough explanation of the CECR's policies as well as useful details regarding the placement choices available to mass communication students. During the session, students provided real-world instances of their self-introductions, which also provided useful advice on how to handle interviews. Participants gained a greater understanding of effective communication strategies in the time of interview.

Film Screening of Pather Panchali

The event saw the active participation of all Undergraduate Media Studies students, who engaged deeply with the film and took part in a reflective discussion session afterward. The conversation highlighted the film’s storytelling, cinematography, and cultural significance, fostering critical appreciation of cinema as an art form.

SAMVADA 2025: Model Press Conferences

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University hosted SAMVADA 2025, a series of Model Press Conferences that brought simulated scenarios of real-world crises to life on campus. Held on 21 August, 2025, the event challenged students to tackle critical issues across the domains of healthcare, politics, and corporate governance. The initiative was designed to bridge classroom learning with real-time media practice. Students, acting as spokespersons, showcased commendable professionalism as they structured formal statements, handled challenging questions, and presented credible evidence—mirroring the high-stakes atmosphere of actual press briefings.
“Such simulations are essential in preparing students for the unpredictable nature of media professions. It was encouraging to see them respond confidently under pressure,” opined Dr. Juby Thomas, Associate Professor from the Department of Media Studies.
Audience members, stepping into the roles of journalists, posed sharp and relevant questions that tested the preparedness and presence of mind of each panel. Their inquiries ranged from ethical accountability to crisis mitigation strategies, adding intensity and authenticity to the simulations.
With critical thinking, media ethics, and public communication at the heart of the event, SAMVADA 2025 reaffirmed the department's commitment to experiential learning and industry readiness.

Student Panel Discussion on Transparency vs. Agenda-Setting in Corporate Communication

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti University organized a student panel discussion titled “Transparency and Agenda-Setting in Corporate Communication” on August 14, 2025at the Council Room, Admin Block. Moderated by Dr. Juby Thomas, Associate Professor of Media Studies, the event brought together students and experts to analyze how these two communication strategies influence corporate narratives and public trust.
Mr. Uddipta Dutta Talukdar opened the discussion by defining transparency as openness, honesty, and accountability, while agenda-setting involves framing information to shape public perception. He stressed that clarity in communication is as crucial as the message itself. Ms. Athena Babu highlighted the positive effects, noting transparency fosters trust, engagement, and innovation, while agenda-setting sharpens focus and clarity.
Conversely, Mr. Niknang A. Marak warned of the risks of excessive disclosure, including security threats and damage to competitiveness, advocating for a balanced approach.Ms. Catherine J.P. illustrated these concepts through case studies of Starbucks’ 2018 racial bias incident, the 2015 Volkswagen scandal, and the Maggi noodles controversy, showing their impact on public trust. The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A where students explored digital-age applications and crisis communication strategies.

KJLMS Orientation Introduces First-Year UG Students to Digital Learning Platform

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed-to-be) University organized a Student Enrichment Programme – LMS Orientation on 12th August 2025 for the first-year undergraduate students of B.A. Media and Communication and B.Sc. Visual Communication. A total of 75 students participated in the session conducted by Mr. Abraham and Ms. Christina Viswanathan, Assistant Professors in the Department of Media Studies. The programme was designed to familiarize students with the Kristu Jayanti Learning Management System (KJLMS), a digital platform that integrates online and offline learning, enabling an effective and seamless blended learning experience.
The orientation introduced students to the key features of KJLMS, including accessing course materials, uploading assignments, participating in discussions, and communicating with faculty members. By equipping students with both the knowledge and practical skills to navigate the system, the session ensured that they could confidently engage with academic resources anytime, anywhere. Beyond technical training, the programme emphasized KJLMS as a space for collaboration, creativity, and organized learning, laying a strong foundation for the students’ academic journey in today’s digital age.

LMS Orientation Equips First-Year PG Students for Digital Learning

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be) University organized a Student Enrichment Programme – LMS Orientation for the first-year postgraduate students of M.A. Media and Communication on 12th August 2025. The session, attended by 25 students, was led by Ms. Sreelakshmy K K, Assistant Professor, Department of Media Studies. The orientation aimed to familiarize the students with the Kristu Jayanti Learning Management System (KJLMS), a robust digital platform that supports seamless academic engagement through a blended mode of teaching and learning.
During the session, students were introduced to the features of KJLMS and guided on effectively accessing course materials, submitting assignments, engaging in discussions, and communicating with faculty. The hands-on orientation equipped the students with essential digital skills to navigate the platform confidently, ensuring they are well-prepared to integrate technology into their academic journey. Wall of Freedom- Ink and Independence

On August 14, 2025, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) marked the spirit of Independence Day with the inauguration of the "Wall of Freedom- Ink and Independence”- Poster Exhibition of Freedom fighters associated with newspaper, an initiative by the Department of Media Studies, Journalism Club. The event, held in M2 Auditorium of the Science Block, was designed to honor freedom fighters who played the role of journalists in freedom struggle, ensuring that the voice of resistance reached every corner of the nation towards to freedom.
The "Wall of Freedom" consists of posters depicting freedom fighters who contributed to various periodicals and authored a number of articles criticizing the British Government. One of the exhibition's highlights is commemorating the freedom fighters at the local and national levels who were linked to various vernacular newspapers and magazines. The event was inaugurated at 10.30 AM by Rev. Father Joshy Mathew, Director of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Gopakumar A.V., Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Prof. Aby Augustine, Head, Department of Media Studies.

Certificate Distribution Ceremony - Honouring Excellence in Media Production

The Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti College organized a Certificate Distribution Ceremony on 9th May 2025 at 2:30 PM in the H2 Auditorium, as part of the annual magazine and newsletter release event. The ceremony highlighted and honored the dedicated work of students associated with the Kristu Jayanti College Media Production Centre. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to student volunteers who contributed to various media initiatives, including event documentation, video editing, live streaming, and creative content development. Faculty members commended the students for their commitment, teamwork, and the high standards of professionalism demonstrated throughout their involvement. The recognition aimed to not only acknowledge their contribution but also to inspire more students to take part in future production activities and skill-building initiatives facilitated by the department. The event concluded with group photographs and a note of thanks to all student collaborators, reinforcing the department’s dedication to fostering experiential learning and creative excellence.

The event brought together graduates from diverse batches for a joyful reunion filled with contemplation, reconnection, and fresh links to the school. Mr. Aby Augustine, Department Coordinator, opened the meeting with a prayer and provided alumni with information on the college's academic growth, curriculum innovations, and infrastructural development. He also discussed the department's newly announced programs, which include BA Journalism and Mass Communication, BSc Visual Communication, and triple major combinations like Journalism, English, and Psychology.
As part of the program, graduates were given a tour of the advanced Media Lab and engaged in one-on-one discussions with Mr. Abraham, Assistant Professor, to share their current career updates. AUTEUR 2025 – National Level Short Film Festival

The Department of Media Studies successfully organized the first edition of AUTEUR 2025, a National Level Intercollegiate Short Film Competition, on 24th March 2025 at the H2 Auditorium, Kristu Jayanti College. The event aimed to provide a creative platform for student filmmakers across the country to showcase their talent in storytelling and visual communication. A total of 23 short films were submitted by participants from various colleges and universities. The event witnessed the physical presence of over 14 participants, who visited the campus and actively took part in the screening and award ceremony. Winners were felicitated under multiple categories including Best Short Film, Best Direction, and Best Cinematography, recognizing their excellence in filmmaking. The event created a space for young creators to engage, learn, and network, and marked a successful beginning to what promises to be an inspiring annual celebration of student cinema.

Kristu Jayanti College Hosts Student Summit on ‘Media Innovation’

Department of Media Studies at Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru organized an inspiring Student Summit on Media Innovation on 25/02/2025. The summit provided a dynamic platform for aspiring media entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative business ideas and gain valuable insights into the rapidly evolving media landscape. The event was graced by Mr. Mockbul Haque, General Manager of the Advertisement Department at The Hindu, Bengaluru, who served as the Chief Guest. Mr. Haque captivated the audience by sharing his personal journey and deep passion for the media industry. He reflected on his experiences, tracing the evolution of media from the traditional platforms to the digital age, offering a compelling narrative of how the industry has transformed over the years.
The summit also featured detailed discussions on the prospects and challenges of media entrepreneurship, offering students a comprehensive understanding of the field. The engaging interactive sessions fostered thoughtful exchanges between students and industry professionals, encouraging participants to explore new avenues for growth and innovation. As a highlight of the event, certificates were distributed to students who presented their entrepreneurial ideas, recognizing their creativity and hard work. Road Safety Awareness Programme

The Department of Media Studies, in collaboration with the Theatre Club and Hennur Police Station, successfully organized a Road Safety Awareness Programme on February 5, 2025, at Chavara Square. The event aimed to educate students and the general public on the importance of road safety and responsible driving. As part of the initiative, students from the Theatre Club performed a street play highlighting the consequences of reckless driving, jaywalking, and neglecting traffic rules. Through powerful storytelling and impactful performances, the play effectively conveyed crucial messages on the importance of adhering to road safety measures. The event was graced by the presence of the Traffic Police Inspector, who served as the guest of honor.
Addressing the audience, the inspector emphasized the significance of following traffic regulations, wearing helmets and seat belts, avoiding mobile phone usage while driving, and the collective responsibility of citizens in ensuring safer roads. His speech left a lasting impression on the students and attendees, reinforcing the urgency of practicing road discipline. The event concluded with circulating the Road safety awareness book mark which was designed by students to adhere to traffic rules and promote road safety awareness in their communities.

War on Screen – A Two-Day Intra- Collegiate Film Festival

The Department of Media Studies Deklass Film Club organised a two-day intra collegiate film festival on January 23 and 24, 2025, under the theme "War on Screen". The event aimed to explore the complexities of war, its portrayal in cinema, and its impact on individuals and society. Through thought-provoking screenings and engaging discussions, the festival brought together students, faculty, and film enthusiasts for a unique cinematic experience. The event commenced with the screening of student productions created by Visual Communication students as part of their academic journey. These films, showcased their learning, experimentation, and mastery of the filmmaking process, receiving accolades for their originality and technical excellence. The highlight of the festival was the thematic screenings that followed, exploring the "War on Screen" concept. A curated selection of films delved into various aspects of war, including its physical, emotional, and societal consequences, offering viewers thought-provoking perspectives through powerful storytelling and cinematic techniques. There were approximately 150 students who have attended the session.

Live Workshop on Exposure, Framing & Movement

The Media Production Centre of Kristu Jayanti College successfully conducted Part I of its Live Workshop Series on January 18th, focusing on the core visual elements of filmmaking — Exposure, Framing, and Movement. The session was attended by aspiring filmmakers, media students, and visual communication enthusiasts. Participants were introduced to the technical and aesthetic aspects of camera handling, including aperture control, framing composition, and dynamic movement techniques using stabilizers and editing software. The workshop featured interactive demos and practice sessions that allowed students to work directly with equipment and software, enhancing their conceptual clarity and practical skills.
