Industrial Visit to Deccan Herald Printing Press
Date: 25 February 2026
An industrial visit to the Deccan Herald and Prajavani Printing Press was organized by the Department of Media Studies for IV semester BA Journalism and Mass Communication students as well as II semester BSc Visual Communication students to gain practical exposure to the newspaper printing industry.

The first stop of the visit was Dodda Aalada Mara, a historic banyan tree planted in the 17th century. Spread across nearly three acres, the 400-year-old tree provided students with an opportunity to appreciate natural heritage and served as an engaging photographic location. The visit highlighted the ecological and historical significance of the site.

Following this, students proceeded to the Deccan Herald and Prajavani Printing Press located in the Kumbalgodu Industrial Area, Bengaluru. At the press, students observed various stages involved in newspaper production, including content processing, plate making, printing, folding, and large-scale distribution methods. Industry professionals explained the functioning of advanced printing machinery and the coordination required to publish newspapers within strict deadlines.

During the visit, professionals demonstrated the circulation process, including sales and marketing strategies involved in newspaper distribution. Students learned that the cost of newspaper production is approximately ₹10.5, which is higher than the selling price, making advertisements crucial for revenue generation. The newspaper typically consists of 80% editorial content and 20% advertisements.

The printing process was explained in detail, highlighting the use of ink and water, where ink contains oil. The printing machine operates with eight colour units, requiring precise alignment of colours using four plates per page. Laser technology is used to create images on plates through processes such as developing, washing, and drying. Ink rollers supply ink to the plates, while damping rollers provide water for accurate printing. The spray bar, containing eight nozzles, ensures uniform moisture distribution. Each plate can print approximately 1 to 1.2 lakh copies efficiently through coordinated movement of image rollers, image carriers, damping rollers, and plates.

The visit offered valuable insights into real-time industrial operations and enhanced students’ understanding of media production and printing technologies. It also bridged the gap between theoretical learning and practical application.
