Awareness on Anti - Ragging through Cinema
Date: 13 August 2025
As part of the Observance of Anti-Ragging Awareness Week, The Department of English at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) organised the event, “Awareness on Anti-Ragging through Cinema”. The event aimed to sensitise students to the long-term psychological and emotional impact of ragging and bullying, while also encouraging empathy, kindness, and mutual respect within the student community. For this initiative, all English Major students were shown the acclaimed Japanese animated film “A Silent Voice”. The film, which poignantly explores themes of bullying, social isolation, and redemption. This movie shows the deep emotional scars that bullying can cause. By using cinema as a medium, the department was able to engage students in a more impactful and relatable manner. The session successfully met its objective of raising awareness about the devastating consequences of ragging. It also reinforced the university’s zero-tolerance stance towards ragging and encouraged students to be active advocates against any form of harassment

The Speculative Society: Edition: 4- ADZAP- Fantasía Agora

The Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) organised a skill development activity titled ADZAP: ‘Fantasía Agora’ under the Speculative Society’s fourth edition for II semester MA English Literature and II semester BSc Computer Science students. The MA English Literature students, performing in teams creatively marketed random products, enhancing communication, teamwork, creativity, public speaking, and entrepreneurial skills through an engaging, competitive, and interactive learning experience for all participants.

The Speculative Society: Edition- 3 Turn Coat: Conversi Argumentorum

The Department of English, under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti deemed to be University, Bengaluru, organised a Skill Development Activity- The Speculative Society: Edition- 3 Turn Coat: Conversi Argumentorum, on 10th September 2025. The turncoat event, held at H2 Audi, Humanities Block, was themed ‘Visual Arts and Performance Arts’. The session was moderated by Dr. Uma Maheswary, Assistant Professor, Department of English, who skilfully facilitated the debate and ensured a structured and engaging discussion among the participants. Participants included Udayashree C, Abhinand Sunny Mathew, Emmanuel Thomas (II MA English Literature), Harsha Ann Jacob, Grace A, and Joshua B (I MA English Literature). Each participant took turns arguing for and against the motions, responding to cues in real time, which demonstrated their ability to think critically and argue from multiple perspectives. The Turncoat event successfully offered a platform for MA English Literature students to enhance their analytical reasoning, public speaking, and adaptability in academic argumentation, reflecting the department’s focus on comprehensive skill development.

The Write Angle Workshop on Research Paper Writing and Formatting

The Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, organised a workshop titled “Research Paper Writing & Formatting” under The Write Angle for II Semester MA English Literature students on 3rd February, 2026 in A3 Auditorium. Dr. Saranya Narayanan, Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Department of English, led the session, explaining research concepts, methodologies, research gaps, and PhD pathways. She guided students in selecting mixed methodologies and identifying topics. Through examples and presentation, she clarified research paper format, making the session interactive and beneficial.

The Write Angle Workshop on Drafting Position Papers
Date: 08 to 12 August 2025
The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, under its students’ research enhancement initiative, The Write Angle, organised a two-session workshop on Drafting Position Papers. The session was conducted by Dr. Sreedevi Santhosh, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University. The first session was held on 8th August 2025 at 1:40 PM in the A1 Conference Hall, Admin Block. The second session took place on 12th August 2025 at 12:00 noon at the same venue. Dr. Sreedevi Santhosh guided the students through the fundamentals of academic writing, the structure and purpose of a position paper, and strategies for presenting well-researched arguments. She also shared practical tips on drafting and refining research papers to meet academic standards. The workshop proved to be an enriching experience for the students, equipping them with essential skills for their academic research pursuits.

The Write Angle

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, organised as part of The Write Angle, a research writing workshop titled ‘The Write Angle: From Idea to Title: Choosing the Right Dissertation Topic’ on 17th July, 2025. The session was led by Dr. Barnashree Khasnobis, who guided the II MA English Literature students through the process of refining their research interests into viable dissertation topics. All the students shared their proposed research areas and actively engaged in the interactive workshop. The proposed dissertation topics spanned a diverse range of areas, including film studies, gender and cultural identity, diasporic literature, oral traditions, and digital media narratives. This diversity of themes not only reflected the students’ academic curiosity but also highlighted the relevance of contemporary issues in literary and cultural studies. The students discussed their ideas with Dr Khasnobis and received constructive, insightful feedback. Under her expert guidance, the students refined their research focus and successfully formulated abstracts for their dissertations. The session proved to be both intellectually enriching and practically valuable, laying a strong foundation for their academic research endeavours.

Silver Screen Forum: Forum: 7

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, hosted Forum 7 - of the Silver Screen Forum on March 9, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM for the IV semester MA English Literature students. The film screened was The Phantom of the Opera, a musical drama that tells the tragic story of a mysterious masked figure who lives beneath an opera house and falls in love with a young singer. The film engaged the student audience through its powerful music, dramatic storyline, and visual presentation. It provided an opportunity for students to appreciate musical theatre and understand themes of love, mystery, and tragedy.

Silver Screen Forum: Forum: 6 Film Fiesta

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, hosted a screening of The Help in Forum 6- Film Fiesta of the Silver Screen Forum on February 10, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for the IV semester MA English Literature students. The Help, directed by Tate Taylor and is based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett. The session examined themes of racism, gender, and representation, including the “white saviour” trope. Students analysed narrative techniques and adaptation, fostering critical thinking and deeper socio-cultural understanding.

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, hosted a screening of The Hours Forum 4 of the Silver Screen Forum on September 25, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for the II MA English Literature students. The film, which intricately weaves together the lives of three women across different time periods, is deeply connected through Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. Central themes explored in the movie include social expectations, identity, and mental health. Following the screening, students engaged in a thoughtful discussion focusing on Woolf’s use of intertextuality, stream-of-consciousness narrative technique, and the depiction of feminine struggles. The session also encouraged reflection on the film’s emotional resonance, its literary references, and psychological complexities.

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, organised Forum 3 of the Silver Screen Forum on 12th September, 2025, in A3 Auditorium, Admin Block. Forum 3 screened the Iranian film The Day I Became a Woman (2020). The film portrayed the lives of three women at different stages, exploring their desires, struggles, and the regressive social forces limiting their freedom. Through symbolic use of settings like the bicycle, veil, and sea, the film offered a contemplative and realistic critique of patriarchy. The audience engaged in a thoughtful discussion, drawing parallels with contemporary gender issues and appreciating the film’s subtle yet powerful narrative style. Overall, the session proved to be stimulating and impactful, leaving the audience with enduring reflections on gender, freedom, and societal constraints.

Silver Screen Forum: Forum: 2

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, organised Forum 2 of The Silver Screen Forum on 7th August, 2025, in H2 Auditorium, Humanities Block. Forum 2 featured the screening of the movie Suffragette (2015), a historical drama directed by Sarah Gavron, as part of its cine-literary initiative. The film, set in early 20th-century Britain, portrays the struggles of working-class women in their fight for the right to vote. The screening began with a brief introduction to the suffrage movement. As the film unfolded, the atmosphere in the hall grew intense, and the students were completely absorbed. Some scenes drew sudden gasps from the audience, while others quietly brought tears to their eyes. The shared silence during the most emotional moments spoke louder than words. The experience was powerful and immersive, leaving a lasting impression of the sacrifices made by women who fought for a cause that shaped history. The students also presented the thematic and cinematic aspects of the movie.

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, launched a new initiative for the film enthusiasts of the department, Silver Screen Forum. The inaugural session was conducted on 16th July 2025, with Dr Gopukumar A.V., Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, delivering the inaugural address. In his address, Dr Gopukumar highlighted the growing significance of film studies as a critical academic discipline that offers profound insights into human experiences, societal dynamics, and cultural expressions. He underscored the importance of engaging with films from diverse directorial perspectives, thereby encouraging a broader and more nuanced understanding of cinematic narratives. The session featured the screening of the Bhutanese film Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom, directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji. The narrative follows a young man assigned to teach in a remote Himalayan village, where he undergoes a transformative journey of self-discovery. Central themes of the film include the importance of human connection, community, adaptability, resilience, and the transformative power of education. Following the screening, an interactive discussion was held, during which students actively engaged in critical reflection and shared their interpretations of the film’s themes and messages. The event enabled students to develop a deeper critical appreciation of cinema, enhancing their understanding of its cultural significance.

Literature Premier League - Gamified learning

The Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, organised Literature Premier League on 10/03/2026 at 10:00 a.m. for the students of MA English Literature. The event consisted of two teams, Kanthapura Vanguards and Malgudi Mavericks. The Kanthapura Vanguards represented the II MA English Literature students, while the Malgudi Mavericks represented the I MA English Literature students. The competition followed a pattern similar to a cricket match, which made the programme lively and engaging.

Turn a Leaf: Readers’ Corner

The Department of English organised “Turn a Leaf” for the students of VI semester BA English Literature on 23rd January 2026. The selected students from the class selected Mia Couto’s short story "War of the Clowns". The event featured interactive activities that engaged participants in exploring the story’s themes and literary elements. These collaborative exercises aimed to enhance reading comprehension while fostering critical thinking and teamwork. By blending analysis with enjoyment, Turn a Leaf successfully created an enriching experience that encouraged participants to engage deeply with literature and develop their reading skills in a dynamic environment.

The Five Boons of Life

The Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, organised a session under the Prismatics of English Literature Student Lecture Series titled “The Five Boons of Life.” Presented by Bopanna NB and Aishwarya VK, the lecture invites students to reflect on the timeless theme that every desire comes with a cost. The session aims to create an engaging academic space where literature becomes a lens to examine human aspirations, choices, and values. Through thoughtful analysis and discussion, the presenters will guide participants to appreciate the deeper philosophical insights embedded in the text while strengthening their literary understanding.

Yoga and Meditation Workshop

The Yoga and Meditation Workshop in collaboration with Yoga and Wellness Club led by trainee Ms. Gomathy for the Department of English students, was an enriching and rejuvenating experience that beautifully combined physical wellness with mental clarity. Organized with the aim of promoting holistic well-being among postgraduate students, the session provided a much-needed pause from academic rigor and intellectual demands.
Ms. Gomathy began the workshop with a brief introduction to the significance of yoga and meditation in maintaining balance in daily life, especially for students engaged in intensive reading, writing, and research. She then guided participants through a series of simple yet effective yoga postures designed to relieve physical strain, improve posture, and enhance flexibility. Special attention was given to breathing techniques (pranayama), which helped students regulate stress and increase concentration. The meditation segment of the workshop was particularly impactful. Through guided mindfulness exercises, Ms. Gomathy encouraged students to focus on the present moment, observe their thoughts without judgment, and cultivate inner calm. The serene environment and her clear, soothing instructions enabled participants to fully immerse themselves in the practice.

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)

The Department of English organised Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), a peer-led English instruction session on 6th February, 2026, in H406, Humanities Block. For the II semester MA English Literature students. The programme focused on developing pedagogical skills by engaging participants in interactive teaching practices tailored to different learner levels. Students actively conducted mini-lessons, applied varied instructional strategies, and received constructive feedback from faculty and peers. The session created a collaborative learning environment that strengthened confidence, clarity in expression, and adaptability, thereby preparing students for future academic and professional teaching responsibilities.

Panel Discussion on Visual Media and Gen Z: Reception, Identity & Negotiation

The Department of English organised a panel discussion titled “Visual Media and Gen Z: Reception, Identity & Negotiation”, featuring student panelists from the BA English and BA JOPYEN programmes, moderated by Dr Nidhin Johny. The session examined how contemporary visual culture influences Generation Z’s identities, perceptions, and modes of interaction. Discussions highlighted the growing dominance of image-centric communication through reels, memes, and short-form videos as key forms of expression. Panelists explored the impact of films and web series on emotional engagement and representation, as well as the global influence of K-pop fandoms and parasocial relationships. Gaming was discussed as a space for storytelling, community formation, and experimentation with virtual identities. The panel also addressed political correctness, cancel culture, and meme culture as emerging forms of commentary. The session concluded by emphasizing that visual media functions as a dynamic cultural space where Gen Z continuously negotiates identity, belonging, and social meaning.

Silver Screen Forum: Forum 5

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) Bengaluru, organised Forum 5 of Silver Screening Forum on 20th January 2026, at 11.00 am in M3 Auditorium. The film Maudie was screened as part of the Forum 5 of the Silver Screen Forum. Maudie is a biographical drama that depicts the life of Maud Lewis, a Canadian folk artist. The film highlights the challenges she faced as a woman living with disabilities caused by rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the hardships she and her husband endured on their journey toward recognition. Through its portrayal of Maud Lewis’s life, the film emphasised resilience, perseverance, and the power of artistic talent. The screening served as a reminder that genuine talent can shine through despite adversity, just as Maud Lewis’s artistic brilliance prevailed beyond the limitations imposed by her disability.

Professional Ethics and Academic Integrity

The Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru, conducted a Student Enrichment Programme on “Professional Ethics and Academic Integrity” for VI BA English Literature and VI JOEN students on 7 January 2026 at the H2 Auditorium. The session was facilitated by Dr. Winnie Joyce A, Associate Professor, Department of Social Sciences, who delivered an insightful lecture emphasizing the significance of ethics and integrity in shaping academic and professional excellence. The programme highlighted core ethical values such as truthfulness, accountability, transparency, fairness, and respect for intellectual property. Through engaging discussions and real-life ethical dilemmas, the resource person encouraged students to critically reflect on decision-making in complex professional contexts. Key issues including plagiarism, conflicts of interest, discrimination, and professional misconduct were addressed, enabling students to understand the long-term impact of ethical choices on individual credibility and organizational culture. The session also underscored the importance of trust as professional currency and emphasized the need for sustainable, value-driven success. Students actively participated in the interaction, making the programme a meaningful and enriching academic experience that reinforced ethical responsibility and integrity as fundamental principles of their academic journey and future careers.

Popular Culture and the Gen Z Life-World

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) hosted a panel discussion titled “Popular Culture and the Gen Z Life-World” on 19 December 2025 at 11:00 a.m., attended by students of BA English and BA JOPYEN. The session examined how Generation Z navigates contemporary cultural spaces shaped by digital media and hyperconnectivity. Discussions focused on shifting entertainment practices, particularly the move from long-form cinema to short-form digital content such as reels, memes, fandoms, and vlogs, highlighting Gen Z’s role as active co-creators rather than passive consumers. The panel also explored Gen Z’s linguistic innovations, identity formation through language, perceptions of disengagement, and the psychological impact of burnout and hustle culture. Fashion was discussed as a powerful medium of self-expression and resistance, encompassing gender-neutral styles, thrift culture, and eco-conscious choices. The session concluded with reflections on Gen Z’s emotional landscape, emphasizing vulnerability, anxiety, and the need for safe social and digital spaces. The event saw the participation of 13 students and fostered meaningful dialogue on youth culture and contemporary society.

Apertura’25 (Research Colloquium)

On 7th November 2025, the Department of English organized Apertura’25, a research colloquium for V Semester BA English Literature students enrolled in the elective course Southeast Asian Literature. The event aimed to cultivate research curiosity and foster academic dialogue on Southeast Asian cultural and literary studies. Students presented their individual research papers on a range of themes, including Thai mythology, Burmese history and storytelling traditions, fusion cuisine as a marker of cultural exchange, sleep mythology in Southeast Asia, and Vietnamese war memory and narrative representation. Each presentation was followed by a focused discussion during which students articulated research objectives, identified critical areas of inquiry, and reflected on emerging insights. The colloquium provided a valuable platform for refining research methodologies, engaging with peer scholarship, and receiving constructive academic feedback from the course instructor, Dr. Irona Bhaduri. Overall, Apertura’25 successfully encouraged critical thinking, strengthened academic discourse, and enhanced students’ understanding of the diverse cultural, historical, and narrative frameworks shaping Southeast Asia—thereby aligning effectively with the pedagogical goals of the elective course.

ELT Game Show Quiz Quest

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, organised an engaging and intellectually stimulating ELT Game Show Quiz Quest on 28th October 2025 for the III Semester M.A. English Literature students. The session was conducted by Dr. S. J. Michael, who skillfully blended learning with entertainment, creating an energetic and collaborative academic environment. The programme featured four exciting rounds, each designed to promote literary knowledge, visual interpretation skills, creativity, and spontaneous thinking. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation, creating a lively atmosphere filled with intellectual excitement, teamwork, and laughter. The innovative format encouraged students to think critically while enjoying the learning process. The event concluded with appreciation for the resource person and the department for hosting an enriching and fun-filled academic activity.

Shaping Futures: Career Insights for English Major Students

The Department of English, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University), in association with the Centre for Employability and Corporate Relations (CECR), organized a session titled “Shaping Futures: Career Insights for English Major Students.”
Held on 17th October 2025 at 3:30 PM in the M1 Auditorium (Main Block), the session featured Prof. Sen. B. Mathews, Director, CECR, as the resource person. The programme aimed to guide MA and BA English Major students on career planning and professional development.
Prof. Mathews highlighted the diverse career opportunities available for English Literature graduates in fields such as media, teaching, content development, public relations, and corporate communication. He also discussed the importance of employability skills, internships, and continuous learning in building a successful career.
The session was highly interactive, inspiring students to explore the wide spectrum of career paths open to English majors.

Ἑστία - Cultural Roots –A Skill Based Activity

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) organized a skill-based activity titled Ἑστία – Cultural Roots on 24th September 2025. The event provided a creative platform for students to explore and represent diverse cultures through poster-making. With vibrant visuals, thoughtful themes, and artistic expressions, the posters highlighted cultural traditions, practices, and identities from across the world. The activity not only showcased the students’ creativity and research skills but also fostered cultural awareness and appreciation, making it an engaging and meaningful learning experience. A total of 49 students enthusiastically participated in the activity, bringing forth a wide spectrum of cultural representations. Their collaborative efforts reflected not only artistic excellence but also a deep understanding of global traditions. The event served as a vibrant space for dialogue and exchange, encouraging students to celebrate unity in diversity.

Educraft

The Department of English, under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Kristu Jayanti deemed to be University, Bengaluru, organised Educraft, a Skill Development Programme that involved II MA English Literature students participating in teaching practice in English classrooms. The sessions were organised from 29/08/2025 to 04/09/2025. In the teaching practice, a variety of texts were taught, including Richard Gregory’s Shame, Katherine Mansfield’s A Cup of Tea, Orhan Pamuk’s My Father’s Suitcase, the poem Once Upon a Time, J. J. Bola’s Refugee, Joseph Addison’s Pleasures of the Imagination, Hannah More’s Slavery, and Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of an American Slave. To make the sessions engaging and effective, the students employed multiple teaching methods such as lectures, quizzes, question-and-answer sessions, discussion-based learning, interactive storytelling, and summarising techniques. Various teaching aids supported these methods, including PowerPoint presentations, blackboards, questionnaires, audiovisual aids, and digital tools like Mentimeter, all of which enhanced participation, comprehension, and critical engagement with the texts. The students found the experiential teaching practice highly beneficial, as it provided them with valuable insights into the complexities and dynamics of classroom teaching.

Training for Volunteering Program

The Department of English at Kristu Jayanti (Deemed to be University) organized a training for the volunteering Program. The resource person, Ms. Maria Rashmi Lobo, Lead – L&D (English), Caring with Colour- A Manaski Kirloskar Initiative. The students from the B.A. English and M.A. English took part in the session. The session began with an engaging icebreaker, setting a warm and interactive tone for the proceedings. She encouraged participants to reflect on their prior experiences by inviting a few to share feedback on the previous orientation. Following the icebreaker, Ms. Lobo outlined the objectives of the volunteering program, emphasizing the importance of empathy, effective communication, and teamwork in community service. She highlighted how volunteering not only benefits society but also contributes to personal growth and skill development. Through a series of thought-provoking anecdotes, she illustrated the real-world impact of compassionate volunteerism. The training incorporated a mix of interactive discussions and practical exercises. Participants were divided into small groups and assigned case studies simulating common challenges encountered during volunteer work. Each group worked collaboratively to propose solutions and later presented their findings to the larger audience. This activity helped students develop problem-solving skills and encouraged active participation.

Student Enrichment Programme LMS Orientation

The Department of English at Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, organised an LMS Orientation for the students of the first year UG and PG on 11th August, 2025. The sessions were led by Dr. Brighton A Rose, Assistant Professor, Department of English for the BA English Literature and I BA JOPYEN B and Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E, Assistant Professor, Department of English, for the I MA English and I BA JOPYEN A. The orientation on Learning Management System (LMS) familiarised students with the platform’s features for effective academic engagement. The session demonstrated login procedures, navigation tools, and access to course materials, quiz and discussion forum. Interactive demonstrations ensured hands-on understanding. The orientation enhanced students’ digital learning skills, ensuring they could confidently utilise the LMS to support their academic activities and overall learning experience.

The Speculative Society: Edition- 1 Debate: Contra Verba

The Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Bengaluru, launched a new initiative The Speculative Society aimed at honing the public speaking and oratorical skills of the MA English students. The first edition Debate: Contra Verba was organised on 7th August, 2025, at 12.00 noon, in A1 Conference Hall, Admin Block. The topic for the thought-provoking and engaging debate was ‘Art Should Be Politically Responsible.’ The discussion was moderated by Dr. Shrestha Chowdhury, Assistant Professor, Kristu Jayanti College of Law. The students presented their views both in favour of and against the topic, highlighting the complexities of art’s relationship with politics. It was highlighted in the debate that art can serve as both a tool for social change and a medium for self-expression. The discussion sparked valuable insights, encouraging participants to think critically about art’s role in society.

LMS Orientation for New Faculty - Department of English

The Department of English conducted an LMS orientation for new faculty members on 11 July 2025 at 3:45 PM in the Language Lab, Humanities Block. Organized by the department’s LMS Committee, the session introduced five newly joined faculty members to the basics of KJLMS, including enrolment procedures and key plugins. The orientation aimed to ensure a smooth transition into the department’s digital learning environment.

Certificate Course - Communication Proficiency Programme

The Certificate Course on Communication Proficiency Programme was incepted on 3rd March 2025 with a formal inauguration at 4.40pm in H1 Auditorium, Humanties Block. Dr. Layola Thomas, Coordinator, PG - Department of English delivered Presidential Address. Dr. Kanimozhi, Assistant Professor, Department of English gave a brief of the course with its benefits and Mr. T. Viji, Assistant Professor, Kristu Jayanti College of Law started the session with sharing the outcomes. The objectives of the course are to develop speaking skills, demonstrate speaking skills and reproducing the talent in public speaking. The course is unique in nature as it is encompassed with activity-oriented class every day.
Further, the subsequent sessions were conducted on various sessions including impromptu talk, benefits of reading and presenting newspaper clippings, techniques to use pros and cons, describing a product/situation/an incident/ describing a process or giving direction, interrupting the flow of a speech or task, dramatising soliloquy, dramatising the prophecy of witches, demonstrating a debate, discussion in a group, dealing with opening statements, offering concluding remarks, arguing the facts of a case, analysing a word a day, interpreting an idiom and its origin and extemporising the flow of thoughts by Prof. T. Viji and tell-a-tale, conversation and public speaking by Dr. Kanimozhi.
All the classes were filled with fun moments and activities and the students also got excited to attend each and every class as they could learn the speaking skills through various activities of speaking skills. Moreover, they got an opportunity to showcase and exhibit their talents in different forms of speech like presentation, description, interruption and vocabulary, dramatisation, demonstration, argumentation and conversation, tell-a-tale and public speaking. This certificate course facilitated the students to imbibe and explore activities on the stage beyond written forms which is the need of the hour to enhance the speaking skills of students in the world today.

Community Engagement Programme
Date: 25 April 2025
On 25th April 2025, between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM, the students of B.A. JOPYEN B, as part of their commitment to social responsibility and outreach, conducted a community engagement programme focused on distributing essential provisions at TM Anjinappa Road, K Narayanapura. The initiative aimed to offer immediate support to economically disadvantaged families and to develop a better understanding of their living conditions. During the visit, the students provided essential supplies—such as rice, oil, and lentils—to five families, helping to meet some of their urgent daily needs. They also interacted with the residents to learn more about their challenges, including access to clean drinking water, education for children, healthcare services, and sanitation. This hands-on experience not only provided much-needed material assistance but also deepened the students' awareness of social realities, fostering empathy, civic responsibility, and a spirit of active citizenship. Such initiatives bridge the gap between academic learning and community engagement, inspiring students to contribute meaningfully to society.

Virtuoso Chronicles: A Documentary Screening on the Journey Through Cultural Spaces

The Department of English organised “Virtuoso Chronicles: A Documentary Screening on the Journey Through Cultural Spaces” on 2nd April 2025 for the students of I and II MA English Literature. As part of the Theory, Society and Culture curriculum, the students of I MA English Literature were divided into six groups and tasked with creating short documentaries exploring diverse cultural spaces. Through the documentaries the students embarked on a journey to explore and document how cultural spaces shape identities, histories and interactions. The films reflected the effort, research and creativity of the students who had meticulously studied how spaces communicate culture.

Word Spur- Jumanji Edition

The engaging and interactive skill development activity “Word Spur – Jumanji Edition” was successfully conducted on 9th April in the H1 Auditorium for the students of class IV FRS A. The event aimed to develop and enhance the students' vocabulary skills through a fun and adventurous theme inspired by the movie Jumanji. The session was skillfully hosted by Devasena, a student of the same class, who kept the audience engaged with her confident compering. The activity featured a series of language-based challenges and word games that encouraged students to think creatively and use new vocabulary in context. Participants displayed great enthusiasm and teamwork, making the session both educational and enjoyable. The interactive format helped in reinforcing word usage and comprehension, contributing effectively to the students' overall language development. The event concluded on a high note, leaving students motivated to explore vocabulary in fun and imaginative ways. Dr. Irona Bhaduri, the course teacher, emphasized the importance of the program in enhancing students' vocabulary and communication skills, fostering a deeper connection with language through engaging and interactive activities.

Gratia: Gratitude Journal Exhibition

Gratia: The Gratitude Journal Exhibition, a heartfelt initiative organized for the students of IV BCA H Analytics B, by the Department of English was held in the M2 Auditorium. The event served as a platform for students to pause and reflect on the positive experiences and people in their lives, expressing gratitude through creative journal entries. Each student showcased personalized journals that combined written reflections, artwork, and thoughtful anecdotes, turning individual stories into a collective tapestry of thankfulness and positivity. The exhibition not only highlighted emotional awareness but also fostered a culture of appreciation and mindfulness within the academic environment.

Student Panel Discussion - Cinema and the Young Mind: Does Violence in Movies Shape Youth Behaviour?

The Department of English at Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru organised a student panel discussion on the topic "Cinema and the Young Mind: Does Violence in Movies Shape Youth Behaviour?" The event was held on 28th March 2025 at A2 Audi from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Anu Antony, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Sacred Heart College, Chalakudy.
The session commenced with a welcome address by the student coordinator, who emphasized the significance of discussing the influence of cinema on young minds. Dr. Anu Antony introduced the topic and provided an insightful overview of how media, particularly violent movies, can affect psychological and behavioural patterns in youth. Students actively participated in the discussion, presenting diverse perspectives on whether violent content incites aggression or merely serves as a form of entertainment. Some students argued that exposure to violence in films could lead to desensitization and imitation, while others contended that the impact largely depends on an individual's social environment and upbringing. The panel also explored the responsibility of filmmakers and censorship authorities in regulating content.
The session concluded with Dr. Anu Antony summarizing key insights and encouraging students to be critical consumers of media. She also highlighted the importance of media literacy in distinguishing fictional narratives from reality.

Fenestra

The Department of English organised Fenestra for the II MA English Literature students on 14th February, 2025. This event was a culmination of the internship experiences of the students, which took place between January 2nd, 2025, and February 2nd, 2025. The students presented their internship journeys, showcasing the wide range of fields they explored during their placements. These included roles such as teachers, HR interns, journalists, and PR interns. Each student shared insights into their specific roles and the work they undertook, offering a glimpse into the practical application of their academic studies. The presentations also highlighted the challenges the students faced in their respective internships, providing a real-world perspective on the skills and adaptability required in professional settings. A major focus of the presentations was the learning outcomes gained from the internship experiences. The students reflected on how these experiences contributed to their personal and professional development. The event successfully illustrated the diverse career paths available to literature students after completing their Master's degree. The students’ experiences not only emphasised the value of internships in bridging the gap between theory and practice but also demonstrated the growing opportunities for literature students in various industries. Fenestra provided an excellent platform for students to present their work, engage with their peers, and gain valuable feedback from faculty members, helping them shape their future career trajectories.

Dramatic Storytelling – Echoes of the Past

The Department of English organized a dramatic storytelling event "Echoes of the Past" on February 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM in A3 Auditorium. The 2nd semester BGB B-section students performed, while 2nd semester Psychology A and B, and MBG students attended as the audience. The performance was based on A.K. Ramanujan’s poem The Last of the Princes and explored themes of nostalgia, cultural decline, and the loss of power. The event began with a narrated introduction, followed by scenes portraying the prince’s past grandeur and present isolation. Flashbacks illustrated his youthful pride, leadership, and eventual downfall, supported by symbolic props and expressive acting. A thematic segment included tableau scenes, poetry recitations, and monologues, highlighting the passage of time and change. The final scene, where the prince placed his crown on an empty table, symbolized the impermanence of power. Lighting, music, and stage transitions were effectively used to enhance the storytelling. The audience responded enthusiastically, appreciating the students’ creativity, coordination, and engagement with literature. The event was a resounding success, demonstrating the students’ performance and teamwork skills.

"A Day with an Author" - A Conversation with an International Writer

The Department of English organized an enlightening session titled "A Day with an Author: A Conversation with an International Writer" on 28 January 2025 at the A3 Auditorium. The event featured the distinguished presence of Ms. Dena Merriam, Founder and Coordinator of the Global Peace Initiative for Women and a member of the International Advisory Council of the Auroville Foundation.
The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Ms. Devika, a student of MA English Literature, who highlighted the significance of literary dialogues and cross-cultural conversations in academia.
Fr. Joshy Mathew, Head of the Department of English, along with Ms. Dena Merriam, graced the dais, setting the stage for an engaging discussion.
Ms. Merriam, an esteemed global peace advocate and writer, shared her thoughts on literature, spirituality, and the power of storytelling in fostering peace and understanding among diverse cultures. Her insights captivated the audience, comprising students, faculty members, and literature enthusiasts. She emphasized the role of literature in shaping human consciousness and discussed her experiences in promoting cross-cultural harmony through writing.
The session concluded with an interactive segment where students had the opportunity to engage with Ms. Merriam, asking thought-provoking questions on literature, peacebuilding, and the writer’s role in today’s dynamic world.
The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. Caleb Biju Mathew, a student of BA PYEN (Psychology, English), who expressed gratitude to Ms. Merriam for making the event a resounding success. The event was seamlessly hosted by Ms. Bettina Thomas, who served as the Master of Ceremonies.
"A Day with an Author" proved to be an enriching experience, inspiring students and faculty members alike. The session successfully emphasized the transformative power of literature and its impact on society, leaving the audience with deep reflections on the intersection of writing, spirituality, and global peace.

Literary Food Fest-Palatum Litterarum

The Department of English hosted a vibrant and imaginative Literary Food Fest under the banner of Palatum Litterarum on January 20th, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM at Humanities Block. The event introduced the worlds of literature and culinary arts, showcasing the creativity and enthusiasm of students. Participants presented an extensive variety of foods, each inspired by unique literary themes such as Arabian Nights, Feasts of Fiction, Desert Heavens, Divine Delights, Food and Fairy Tale, Global Street Food, Grims and Gothics, Serial Fillers, The Silk Route, Toons Picnic, Valentine Ventures, and Regal Banquets. Adding to the immersive experience, students dressed according to their chosen themes, transforming the Humanities Block into a dynamic space filled with vibrant visuals and storytelling. The participants not only exhibited their culinary creations but also provided detailed explanations of how their dishes connected to their respective themes, blending storytelling with gastronomy in an innovative way. After the exhibition, the food items were put up for sale, allowing attendees to savour the literary-inspired delicacies. This unique fusion of literature and food created an atmosphere of creativity, knowledge-sharing, and community bonding. The event concluded successfully, with widespread appreciation for the students’ effort, imagination, and teamwork. The Literary Food Fest proved to be a delightful celebration of culture, art, and food, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for the intersection of literature and culinary arts.
