Blackout Poetry Competition

As part of the 60th International Literacy Day observance, the Department of English, Kristu Jayanti Deemed to be University, Airport Road Campus, conducted a creative Blackout Poetry Activity on 8th September, 2026, in B308, B-Block. The competition was organised to encourage students to explore literacy through artistic expression. Using newspaper articles as their source material, students selectively highlighted, circled, and retained words to create meaningful poems while obscuring the remaining text. A total of 31 students participated in the event. The activity encouraged close reading, vocabulary development, creativity, and critical engagement with everyday texts. It also demonstrated how existing written material can be transformed into new forms of literary expression, fostering imagination, linguistic awareness, and appreciation for the creative possibilities of literacy.
