Aren’t digital communities the epitome of selective activism and performative inaction? They refuse to speak on certain things, claiming that a post wouldn’t make a difference in the whole situation. Yet have the temerity to spam their account with content when it suddenly trends. This is the stark reminder that silence and pretending to be powerless are a choice. If you only fight when it is convenient, you’re still silent in the face of injustice. However, some people hold a different perspective on this; they are exhausted beyond words and tired of trying to bring about a change in a world that refuses to change. They believe their strongly-worded statement to some 250 followers isn’t doing anything for the real-world issues. For them, digital silence isn’t apathy but self-preservation, an acknowledgement of their limits in an overwhelming cycle of global crises.
