The serene green turf at Kristu Jayanti became more than just a venue-it's where silent struggles found a voice and lonely hearts discovered companionship. Department of Social Work organised an event in observance of "World Suicide Prevention Day". Sitting together on the lawn created an informal, inclusive atmosphere, making it easier for participants to express themselves and connect emotionally.
Each poster, each shared experience, was a beacon of hope, showing the path toward understanding and healing. During the event, students courageously shared their real-life stories.
Listening to the heartbreaking account of my classmate's close relative's suicide, I felt a deep ache settle within me — a reminder of how invisible pain can ripple through families and leave wounds that time alone cannot heal. One of my classmates recited a poem written by a survivor of suicide, and the words carried the weight of both anguish and hope-each line a testament to the strength that lies in surviving the darkest moments.
As these stories unfolded, so did empathy-we comforted each other, showing the transformative power of active listening. I felt a signal that behind every darkness is a person deserving love and understanding. I was struck by the reality that caring is not limited to family or friends alone but extends to the larger human community. Sitting side by side, we realised the profound power of empathy — that sometimes, just knowing someone cares can save a life. It offered a reminder that we are never alone in our struggles and that sharing our stories builds bridges to hope and resilience.
