Introduction
The connection between traffic and the stock market is not visible at first glance.
Traffic is the flow of people and vehicles on roads, while the stock market is a system where shares of corporations are bought and sold. However, in the modern world of big data, traffic is one of the essential indicators of the economy.
The number of people who visit different places – malls, airports, hotels, offices, tourist destinations, etc., is critical to the economy. The more customers visit these places, the more revenue and profit companies gain. And the profits directly impact the stock prices. So, in the modern world, investors can use traffic data to predict stock market trends.
Thanks to artificial intelligence, big data, satellites, GPS systems, and cell phones, investors can examine the traffic flows to analyze the business performance even before companies report their financial statements. Hence, in the present time, traffic data has become an essential part of investment research.
Traffic data means the number of people and vehicles in a particular location, usually gathered in shopping malls, airports, railways, as well as customers in shops, tourists in various destinations, and vehicle traffic near factories and warehouses. This data helps predict the level of business activity in different organizations.
The stock market is a system where investors buy and sell securities issued by companies. In other words, it is a system of trade where people purchase stocks of corporations in the hopes of reselling them for a more significant price. The stock prices depend on the profits of the companies and the expectations of the investors.
If people believe that the company will become more profitable, the stock price will increase regardless of the current state of the organization.
Traffic is an indirect indicator of business performance. In other words, it means that the value of the flow of people or vehicles reflects the level of sales. For example, if many people visit a shopping mall, the companies that are in this mall get more profits. This will prompt investors to buy more shares of these companies, which will then cause the stock prices to rise.
The traffic flow to specific destinations can be a reliable indicator of how well certain businesses will perform. The more people visit the airport, the more passengers airlines carry, the more money they receive from tickets, and the more profit they get. In addition, increased traffic means more demand for services provided by hotels, catering companies, and other travel-related organizations. And it also impacts the stock exchange, thus influencing the prices of such firms. However, not only positive trends in traffic flows impact the stock market. The reduction of passenger flow to many destinations causes companies to lose money and, accordingly, stock prices to fall.
Modern technology allows the investment community to take advantage of the latest achievements of science and technology in order to get an honest perspective on the companies’ performance. Artificial intelligence, big data, GPS, and even satellite photography can help investors see the big picture of how well the economy works long before the company releases its quarterly financial statements.
The most valuable technologies are the following:
1. Artificial intelligence (AI)
2. Big data
3. Global Positioning System (GPS)
4. Satellites
Artificial intelligence can review big traffic data and find patterns that were previously unavailable to humans. AI is used to predict future performance based on the data. Big data is a collection of data from different sources such as GPS, cell phones, toll booths, shopping malls, and traffic. With big data, people can predict the economy and accordingly the stock market.
GPS technology helps measure the number of vehicles at particular points. With GPS data, companies can see how many customers come to their website or physical location. Satellites can monitor the number of cars in parking lots and predict the traffic based on that information.
There are many examples of how traffic influences the stock market. Here are some of them:
1. If people go to the mall in big groups on weekends or during holidays such as Diwali or Christmas, clothing stores and other commercial organizations that operate in malls will have more profits than usual.
2. During the holiday season, more people fly airplanes to their destination. And so, more traffic means more revenue for airlines and more profits for hotels and food service companies.
3. If there are more tourists in the area than usual, this will result in increased profits for catering companies, travel agencies, and hotels.
4. During the high season, more cars hit the road. It means an increase in sales for automobile companies and fuel stations.
The benefit of using traffic data is evident. There are several advantages, including the ability to:
• Determine the business performance before it is publicly available;
• Help in assessing the potential of change in supply-demand relationships;
• Make the right investment decisions;
• Get an idea of the economy’s state;
• Predict the company’s sales based on the current traffic;
• Determine the level of customer demand based on traffic;
• Help the business make smarter plans for the future. And so on.
Although traffic is a solid indicator of business performance, it has several limitations. First of all, it is necessary to remember that traffic alone cannot reflect the changes in the stock price. Some factors such as weather or national holidays, can affect traffic volumes. In addition, government restrictions or social distancing may impact both traffic and the economy. And finally, traffic data may be unreliable in the context of pandemics or natural disasters. It is vital to remember that there are no universal truths or simple solutions. And so, traffic data should be considered in combination with other data.
Investors now rely not only on conventional financial reports but also on alternative data. Traffic data can give honest information about the level of business and accordingly about the value of the stocks. Thus, many hedge funds around the world use such information to make profitable investment decisions.
Summary of the Relationship Between Traffic and Stock Market In conclusion, I would say that traffic and the stock market are closely related. Traffic helps in tracking people’s behavior, business and commercial activity, and the overall economy. It is evident that more traffic means more sales and profit. A rise in shopping malls, airports, restaurants, and other businesses’ traffic leads to higher levels of economic activity, which raises stocks’ prices and creates a positive image in shareholders’ minds. By analyzing traffic patterns, the stock market estimates the sales of a company using modern technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Global Positioning System, and satellites. Such analysis helps predict future profits and positively contributes to the stocks’ value. Nevertheless, traffic is only one factor among many others that influence the stock market. For instance, changes in government policies, inflation rates, level of competition, and other phenomena affect company sales and, consequently, its value. That is why traffic should be considered as one aspect of financial analysis that helps determine whether to invest in a certain company or not. In summary, the connection between traffic and the stock market illustrates the relationship between economics and financial markets and allows investors to identify market trends.
